Cimarrón, the Latin American production-services powerhouse, has boarded “Los Indecentes” (“The Indecent”), the feature debut of Uruguay’s Jean Michel Cerf, co-director of Amazon Prime Series “Barrabrava,” set up at Uruguay’s Sueño Cine.
Part of The Mediapro Studio, Cimarrón is set to co-produce “Los Indecentes,” Sueño Cine founder Valentina Gedanke will be presenting the project at the Málaga Festival’s Fund & Co-Production Event (MAFF) running this week in the Andalusia port city.
Written by Cerf, also a long-time AD in Uruguay on high-profile titles such as Federico Veiroj’s “The Moneychanger” and Brazilian Prime Video show “Lov3,” which was serviced by Cimarrón, “Los Indecentes” centers on Pedro, 45, an actor in his first year as a theater teacher, who turns to an unconventional method that puts his students to the test. Challenges the boundaries of teaching, it also aims to prevent his class from being shut down and Pedro losing his job.
“‘Los Indecentes’ is a reflection on the role of acting and on how creative impulse and passion work when we are trying to find our way in life. The story constantly moves between reality and fiction, using the teacher-student relationship to approach the subject from a fresh angle,” Cerf and Gedanke said in a joint statement.
They added: “It reminds us that it is never too late to feel with the same passion as before. Because theater does not begin when the audience applauds or when the curtain rises: It begins much earlier. It becomes a way of defending ourselves in a world where emotions often seem unimportant, impractical, almost inconvenient. A world where feeling can appear to be a problem.”
“Co-producing on ‘Los Indecentes’ comes from a relationship of years of work and collaboration with Jean Michel Cerf. We believe in his talent and quality of his work, channelled here ito a solid project touching universal issues from an intimate and emotional point of view,” Cimarrón CEO Santiago López told Variety “At Cimarrón, part of The Mediapro Studio, we are excited at being part of this story and continuing to collaborate from our different offices in developing Latin American talent.”
Founded in 2018 by López, Hernán Musaluppi and Diego Robino, Cimarrón lifted off with Uruguay’s early emergence from COVID-19 in June 2020 to leverage the country’s stable currency, security, tax breaks and relative low costs to power up a production services business to which it brought a large creativity and production quality, servicing, for example, J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow.”
Cimarrón has also made an impact as a producer, co-producing Paula Hernández’s “The Ravishing Wind,” box office hit “Extorsion,” “Barrabrava” and Cannes Un Certain Regard hit “The Delinquents.” Cimarrón now operates offices in Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico and, most recently, Colombia,
Led by Gedanke, Sueño Cine was founded. “with the purpose of supporting film projects that address contemporary themes from an intimate, emotional, and generational perspective, with a strong authorial vision, narrative sensitivity, and a commitment to collaborative work,” she told Variety.
