‘Lanterns’ Trailer: Green Lanterns Hal Jordan & John Stewart Are At Odds With Each Other In DC HBO Series; Premiere Window Set

HBO has released the first trailer for Lanterns, its upcoming series from DC Studios starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, respectively, as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The clip also reveals that the series will premiere in August on HBO.

It’s clear in the footage the relationship between the two is a bit tense. The trailer opens with Hal jumping out of a moving car, leaving John flying off a cliff, relying on his quick wits and Green Lantern powers to save himself. He does. “I could have died,” John says to Hal. ‘You wanted me to train you, I’m trainin’ you,” Hal asserts.

The two are investigating a small-town murder in Nebraska, and clearly are at odds with each other and with the local police.

In the clip we get a quick glimpse of Hal flying, the Green Lantern costume, the Power Ring, and a brief mention of aliens — one them is a squirrel, likely a reference to Ch’p.

Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern, Lanterns follows recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland, per the logline.

Cast also includes Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, Chris Coy, and Paul Ben-Victor.

Series is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The Lanterns pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes.
