EXCLUSIVE: Kiernan Shipka (The Last Showgirl) and Cole Sprouse (The Rivals of Amziah King) will lead the cast of Goodbye Girl, an Amazon MGM Studios rom-com from Gulfstream Pictures that enters production in New Orleans this week.
Marking director Oran Zegman‘s follow-up to Honor Society, the Paramount+ coming-of-age comedy starring Angourie Rice and Gaten Matarazzo, the film follows Jess (Shipka), who’s a professional heartbreaker. Literally. When she’s hired by a cowardly bride to dump her groom (Sprouse) days before their wedding, she not only fumbles the job… but falls hopelessly in love.
The script was written by Danielle Hoover and David Monahan, based on a story by Hoover, Monahan, and Jessica Elbaum. Mike Karz and William Bindley of Gulfstream provided some financing and are producing, alongside Dawn Bierschwal and Ryan Lewis of The RAD Lab and Daniel Wagner.
“GOODBYE GIRL is exactly the kind of elevated, character-driven romantic comedy we love to champion at Gulfstream,” said principals Karz and Bindley. “Kiernan and Cole bring incredible charm, wit, and emotional honesty to these roles, and Oran has such a fresh, confident voice as a director. This film is smart, funny and heartfelt and we are excited to be working with Dawn and Ryan and the rest of our stellar creative team.”
Currently appearing in the fourth season of HBO Max’s Industry, Shipka will next be seen starring alongside Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. in The Shitheads, a comedy from Macon Blair that just premiered at Sundance. Also recently seen in films including Longlegs, Totally Killer, and the critically acclaimed The Last Showgirl, she is repped by WME, Anonymous Content, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Sprouse will next be seen opposite Matthew McConaughey in The Rivals of Amziah King, a crime thriller that premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival. Some of his previous film credits include Five Feet Apart, Lisa Frankenstein and Moonshot. He is repped by WME, Entertainment 360 and DLA Piper.
Goodbye Girl marks the fifth Gulfstream title picked up by Amazon MGM, following the upcoming Pretty Lethal, starring Uma Thurman, Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Iris Apatow, Millicent Simmonds, and Avantika; Upgraded, starring Camila Mendes, Marisa Tomei, Archie Renaux, and Andrew Schulz; The Other Zoey, starring Josephine Langford and Drew Starkey; and One Fast Move, starring KJ Apa and Maia Reficco. Gulfstream is also producing the upcoming Honeymoon with Harry, starring Jake Gyllenhall and Kevin Costner, for Amazon MGM.
Zegman is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller; Hoover by Robertson / Taylor Agency, Rothman Brecher Ehrich Livingston, and Paul Hastings; Monahan by AKA Talent, Rothman Brecher Ehrich Livingston, and Paul Hastings; and Elbaum by UTA.
