As Kevin James returns to the romantic comedy, Solo Mio debuts with a stellar Rotten Tomatoes score. The upcoming film is the star's first rom-com since his supporting role in Hitch (2005), starring Will Smith, which was released 21 years ago.
Now, ahead of its release on February 6, Solo Mio has debuted with a 91% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie only has 11 reviews at the time of writing, so its score is subject to change as more are published. Its audience score should also take shape once the movie releases in theaters.
Solo Mio is directed by the Kinnane brothers (Home Team), who co-wrote the script with Kevin James, starring as a man whose dreams of a picturesque Italian wedding are shattered when his fiancée leaves him at the altar, and he embarks on their planned honeymoon alone across Italy, immersing himself in the country's vibrant culture, food, and beauty.
Other than Kevin James, the cast also includes Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother), Nicole Grimaudo, Kim Coates, Jonathan Roumie (The Chosen), Julee Cerda, Julie Ann Emery (Better Call Saul, Hitch), and Alessandro Carbonara.
ScreenRant's Solo Mio review diverges from the critical consensus, as Gregory Nussen gave the movie only three out of 10 stars and writes, "Kevin James dallies with heartbreak in [a] weakly-plotted 'Eat Pray Love' riff... The latest Angel Studios' release predictably suggests that the best cure for a broken engagement is a different engagement." They continue:
"Other than a handful of trite shots of James participating in all manner of stereotypical Roman tourist activity, Solo Mio gives us no genuine insight into whom this man is, nor what he might want out of life except a wife."
Otherwise, critics largely agree that Solo Mio is a warm and charming romantic comedy that shows a more emotionally grounded side of Kevin James. Reviews praise his chemistry with co-star Nicole Grimaudo, calling their relationship sincere and engaging. Many highlight the film's heart, humor, and maturity – noting that James stretches beyond his usual comedic persona to impressive results.
The movie is also celebrated as a love letter to Italy, with gorgeous locations and travelogue-worthy cinematography adding to its appeal. While some reviewers note its occasional cheesiness or contrived moments, many feel that its sweetness outweighs its flaws. With a strong supporting cast and breezy tone, Solo Mio is widely seen as an uplifting and swoon-worthy date night pick.
