Kelly Ripa stuns audience as she reveals story behind her 'really embarrassing' hotel bathroom mishap

Kelly Ripa revealed the 'really embarrassing' way she hurt her back during a recent segment of Live with Kelly and Mark.

The talk show host, 55, seemed incredulous herself as she described how sitting on a toilet caused her to injure herself during a stay at a hotel with husband Mark Consuelos, also 55.

In a video posted to the show's Instagram on Thursday, Ripa, who recently complimented her muscular spouse on his very tight white shirt, was seen approaching the audience during a break, looking camera-ready in a black blouse and red trousers.

'You wanna hear what I did? It's really embarrassing. Guess how I hurt my back?' she told them.

'Bending down. Sitting on a toilet,' Ripa deadpanned before demonstrating how it happened.

'Typically, the toilet tissue is on this side, like a normal person. But, we were staying at a hotel. It was over here, so, I went like that and hurt my back.'

Some people in the audience sighed in sympathy.

'Yeah, I said it,' Ripa added, facing the camera. 'I hurt my back sitting on a toilet.'

Earlier this month, Ripa opened up about the gum graft surgery she had in late July after delaying it for five years.

'[I'm] so much better,' she told People.

'It was fine. It was definitely necessary. I delayed it for five years. I really did because I was like, 'I'll wait until I retire.' And then, eventually my dentist was like, 'Okay, now we have to finish it.''

Ripa took time off work during her recovery from surgery, and she admitted that it was 'a little strange' to have stitches in her mouth.

'I was talking the whole time. I was talking like crazy. [Mark] was like, 'You're not supposed to be talking.' I'm like, 'I'm fine!' It did look weird, though, when I talked.

'What was funny, a few of my producers said, 'You just need to take the cotton out, take the cotton out from under your lower lip.' And I was like, 'There is no cotton. That is just swelling. That's why I'm not at work today.''

Ripa's gum issues were caused by 'over brushing' and 'over flossing' - but the TV star indicated her recovery was almost complete.

'I'm getting better. I'm retraining myself. I host a morning show. I know when there's bad dental hygiene involved. It's a good-bad habit, or a bad-good habit.'

Consuelos also spoke about his wife's surgery during her absence from the show.

'There's a list of things you are not allowed to do. [No] talking, she has to eat soft food, can't suck out of a straw. You can't examine it, which means pulling down the lip,' he said on Live.

'Last night, she was like, 'Can you look?' And I'm like, 'I'm not pulling your lip down.''

Gum graft surgery treats thinning gums or gum recession, and reduces the risk of severe gum disease.

'Her dentist said five years ago, 'You could do it in about five years.' And she said, 'I didn't know I would still be on the air in five years.' But the one thing about it — she is doing well, doing great — she is not allowed to talk.'

Ripa is no stranger to TMI confessions. Back in August, she shared that she taped the show without any pants on during the pandemic.

'I loved doing the show without pants on,' she said.

'Guess what? While you were watching the show and we were shooting from a computer screen, I had a blouse on top and nothing on the bottom.'

Ripa also revealed that she was eating cereal during the TV show's commercial breaks.

She said: 'We would go to commercial break and I would be Grape-Nutting it, and then, back to air. It was great!'
