Over the last year or so, the possibility of John Wick 5 happening has become more real. Even though Keanu Reeves' assassin died at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate confirmed plans were in motion to make a fifth film. Franchise director/overseer Chad Stahelski has affirmed that ideas are taking shape, with John no longer fighting the High Table the only concrete tease provided so far.
Yet, the potential existence of John Wick 5 has polarized viewers. Arguments have been made that Reeves' character needs to stay dead, giving him the perfect conclusion. Others suggest John Wick must come back, as the franchise is nothing without him, and the films remain incredibly entertaining. But while we wait to see if Reeves returns for John Wick 5, he's suiting up for the role in a different, but more exciting, capacity.
Keanu Reeves Is Returning As John Wick In New PS5 Video Game
It's now been officially announced that a John Wick video game is coming to the PlayStation 5. Lionsgate and Saber Interactive are behind the game, which was formally revealed during the most recent PlayStation State of Play. The untitled John Wick game will tell a wholly original story, with Reeves returning to voice the hitman of a few words.
This marks the second time that Reeves is returning to voice John Wick in a non-live-action project. It was previously revealed that he'll voice a younger version of the character in a prequel movie focused on the night Wick gained his freedom from the assassin underworld by performing an "impossible task."
With his likeness being used, it would've felt unnatural for anyone other than Reeves to voice him here. And with his creative input, the John Wick PS5 game promises a return of the character audiences know and love that's fully supported by the beloved franchise lead.
The John Wick Video Game Is More Exciting Than John Wick 5
What makes this so exciting is that the video game can happen without undoing John Wick 4's ending, something John Wick 5 can not claim. This will be an expansion of his story in the past, either taking place prior to the original movie in the John Wick timeline or squeezing into a small gap, like Ballerina did between the third and fourth entries.
There's no risk involved in tarnishing what came before with this project. The game will likely enrich John's story overall, potentially even making his death work even better. While John Wick 5 has to find the perfect way to reverse the character's well-received fate, this game can easily allow Reeves to return to action, and in an entirely new format.
That's a key reason to be excited for the game. Instead of just watching another John Wick adventure, people will be able to control the skilled killer and become the Baba Yaga for themselves. So long as the video game lives up to its promise, perhaps John Wick 5 won't be needed at all.
