Dhruv is a Lead Writer in Screen Rant's New TV division. He has been consistently contributing to the website for over two years and has written thousands of articles covering streaming trends, movie/TV analysis, and pop culture breakdowns.
Before Screen Rant, he was a Senior Writer for The Cinemaholic, covering everything from anime to television, from reality TV to movies.
After high school, he was on his way to become a Civil Engineer. However, he soon realized that writing was his true calling. As a result, he took a leap and never looked back.

Looking back at Keanu Reeves' long line of movies, it is hard not to associate him with two major franchises: The Matrix and John Wick. While he has been a part of quite a few other acclaimed and commercially successful flicks, these two franchises are almost synonymous with his name. Before John Wick gave his career a major revival, he was widely recognized only for playing Neo in The Matrix.

Interestingly, though, The Matrix was not the first cyberpunk sci-fi movie Keanue Reeves starred in. Almost four years before The Matrix took Hollywood by storm, Keanu Reeves served as the titular lead in Johnny Mnemonic. Unlike The Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic was mostly panned by critics, but it soon garnered a more cult following for its ambition and campiness.

A closer look at Keanu Reeves' past roles in sci-fi franchises reveals that he has been linked to another major cyberpunk franchise. The Matrix's future remains uncertain since little has seemingly been revealed about the planned fifth installment in the franchise. However, two other cyberpunk franchises that Reeves has previously associated with have the perfect opportunity to have him back in some capacity.

Apart From The Matrix & Cyberpunk 2077, Keanu Reeves Is Also Secretly Linked To Neuromancer

It is well known that Keanu Reeves portrays Neo and Johnny Silverhand in The Matrix and Cyberpunk 2077, respectively. However, not many know about his secret connection to William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk franchise, Neuromancer. Johnny Mnemonic, which featured Reeves as the titular lead, is also based on a William Gibson story of the same name.

Johnny Mnemonic also unfolds in the same universe as Neuromancer and serves more as a prequel to the iconic cyberpunk novel. The cyberpunk movie was also written by William Gibson himself and features many core sci-fi ideas and concepts that drive his entire Sprawl trilogy.

In an interview (via BBC), Reeves even explained that he is drawn to futuristic sci-fi roles because he grew up reading books like William Gibson's Neuromancer.

Apple TV Has The Perfect Chance To Feature A Keanu Reeves Cameo In Neuromancer

Apple TV's upcoming adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer is one of the most exciting sci-fi shows of the century. Interestingly, the episode titles of the series have reportedly been revealed, and one episode is even named after Johnny Mnemonic.

While little seems to be known about the show's adaptation approach, the episode, titled "Mne*mon*ic," might dive into the Keanu Reeves character's connection to the franchise's present timeline. It will likely explore Molly Millions' past with Johnny Mnemonic and the events that gradually shaped her before she collaborated with Case in the present.

Considering how Johnny Mnemonic himself could appear in this episode of the Apple TV sci-fi show, Neuromancer has the perfect opportunity to have Keanu Reeves in a cameo role. He could reprise his classic sci-fi role, which would perfectly tie the William Gibson movie to the new show.

Reeves Can Also Appear In The Upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 Adaptation

Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077

A live-action take on Cyberpunk 2077 is still in the early stages of development. Owing to this, it is unknown whether it will be a movie or a TV show. However, what is known is that it is a joint effort between CD Projekt Red and Anonymous Content (True Detective, Mr. Robot, Spotlight, and The Revenant). Former HBO executive, David Levine, who worked on Game of Thrones, is also overseeing the project.

Instead of being a direct adaptation like Neuromancer, the Cyberpunk 2077 live-action is also set to be more of an expansion of the game's existing universe. Similar to Cyberpunk Edgerunners, however, it will be set within the broader universe of Night City.

Since Johnny Silverhand will still be a part of the overarching universe's history, even the live-action take on Cyberpunk 2077 could feature him in some capacity. Hopefully, at least one of the two upcoming live-action cyberpunk adaptations will make Keanu Reeves return. His return to cyberpunk sci-fi has been long overdue, especially now that The Matrix's future has become increasingly uncertain.
