Dawson and Joey forever.

After the death of her Dawson’s Creek costar James Van Der Beek on Feb. 11, Katie Holmes paid tribute to her late friend while looking back on their time together.

"James, thank you," Katie's handwritten note shared to Instagram Feb. 12 read. "To share a space with your imagination is sacred—breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each other's hearts are safe in their expression. These are some of the memories, along with laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs—adventures of a unique youth."

Katie went on to note that her costar always displayed "compassion, bravery, selflessness and strength."

"An appreciation for life with the integrity that life is art—creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children," she added, "the journey of a hero. I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it."

As Katie shared, she penned her note from forming "some words with a heavy heart."

"This is a lot to process," she captioned her post. "I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved." Referring to his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek, Katie noted, "Kimberly, we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children."

Katie's emotional message comes after James’ family confirmed he had died following a yearslong battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the statement alongside a picture of the actor read on his Instagram account Feb. 11. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

James—who shared children Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and Jeremiah, 4, with his wife Kimberly—starred as Dawson Lerry opposite Katie, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams in the coming-of-age teen drama for six seasons from 1998-2003.

And amid James’ cancer battle, which he publicly shared in 2024, his Dawson’s family rallied around him.

In September, Katie, Joshua, Michelle, James’ onscreen parents Mary-Margaret Humes and John Wesley Shipp, Busy Philipps and more Dawson’s alum reunited for the live cast reunion in New York City. For the charity event—where the cast did a live reading of the pilot episode—Lin Manuel Miranda stood in for James, who missed the event due to a stomach bug.

Still, the Varsity Blues star didn’t miss the moment to share his gratitude for towards his former castmates and fans.

"I can't believe I'm not there," James, whose family was in attendance at the event, said in a video message. "I can't believe I don't get to see my cast mates, my beautiful cast, in person. I wanted to stand on this stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight."

Following the event, Katie shared a special tribute to her costars and “beautiful humans” Josh, James and Michelle.

“For our shared journey,” she wrote alongside a video from the evening on Instagram in September. “For our everlasting bond. James, Josh, Michelle… from April 1997—- I love you. James, you got this. We got you. To everyone who supported us from the beginning and who continue to support James and his beautiful family, we thank you. Thank you for last night.”

Returning the love to Katie, James replied, “Love you! Thank you for being you.”
