Kacey Musgraves explains why she feuded with Miranda Lambert for over a decade

Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert grew up 18 miles away from each other in Texas where they learned how to play guitar from the same teacher John DeFoore and yet they didn't speak for over a decade.

The country crooners also shared the late Barbara Taylor in common as it was Musgraves' grandmother who convinced Lambert to appear in USA Network's reality competition Nashville Star in 2003, which launched her career.

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old brunette was hoping Mama's Broken Heart, a song she co-wrote with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, would become her first single in 2011, but the 42-year-old blonde 'couldn't live without' it as her own.

'I loved the song so much. I had been a staff writer for years at that point, writing for other people and had finally felt like I was collecting songs that felt like me that I didn't wanna pitch to anyone else,' Musgraves told NPR Music on Wednesday.

'Then, the song gets pitched to [Lambert] without my consent or knowledge. It was a tricky situation. She ended up loving the song and she really wanted it. And I had other co-writers to consider.'

The ex-wife of Blake Shelton told Taste of Country in 2011 that she 'loved that song' and 'thought it was so unique' and lamented: 'Man, I wish I would have written that.'

But it wasn't until 2013 when Mama's Broken Heart reached number two on the US Hot Country Songs chart and number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Musgraves later realized 'everyone won' in that scenario and forcing her 'to go back to the drawing board' actually led to her penning Merry Go Round, which 'ended up making way more sense for me anyways, aesthetically and lyrically.'

It wasn't until the eight-time Grammy winner saw an Instagram video of Lambert riding a horse that she decided to ask her to collaborate on her upcoming duet, Horses and Divorces.

'I just randomly reached out to her,' Musgraves said.

'And I was like, "I know we've had our s*** over the years, but listen, we've at least got two things in common. I'm not trying to be your friend. You got your life, I have mine. But I think this would be a pretty f***ing funny song, and we should write it with Shane [McAnally]."

'And she was like, "Hell yeah, I'm in, let's do it." So it was very full circle in so many ways. We aired out any of the old laundry. We had some laughs and wrote the song in a matter of a few hours.'

The outspoken Democrat added: 'I think it could be also a micro representation of what I wish that the world would do sometimes, just f***ing sit down and poke fun at each other, have a beer and call it a day.'

The talented pair also happen to share the same make-up artist, Moani Lee.

On Wednesday, Musgraves - who's been celibate for over 400 days - released her sexually-frustrated music video for Dry Spell, which was set in a small-town grocery store.
