Collier Jennings is an entertainment journalist with a substantial amount of experience under his belt. Collier, or "CJ" to his friends and family, is a dedicated fan of genre films - particularly science fiction, fantasy and comic book adaptations, not to mention all forms of animation animation. This stems from a close bond with his father, who introduced him to these genres via copies of X-Men comics and reruns of the original Ultraman series. Using his near-encyclopedic knowledge and bottomless love of genre, he's been able to tackle a wide variety of articles.
Justifiedremains one of the greatest modern Westerns ever to grace a television screen, but few fans know it's based on a short story by Elmore Leonard. Leonard's "Fire in the Hole" introduced the world to U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), and gave series creator Graham Yost a foundation on which to build a series. Yost isn't the only creative who's drawn inspiration from Leonard's work; over the years, other filmmakers have adapted his work for the silver screen, most notably 3:10 to Yumaand Out of Sight. It's the latter that actually stands out, as it shares a world with Justified.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Out of Sight is centered on infamous bank robber Jack Foley (George Clooney) and U.S. Marshall Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez) as they find themselves in a game of cat and mouse following a mass breakout. What separates Out of Sight from other chase films is the fact that Foley and Sisco end up sparking a romantic connection. Out of Sight is widely regarded as the film that truly catapulted Clooney into superstardom and Soderbergh into mainstream success. It also features a character who appears in the spinoff seriesJustified: City Primeval.
One Character Links 'Justified: City Primeval' and 'Out of Sight'

Justified: City Primeval follows Raylan Givens' journey from Kentucky to Miami, as he hunts Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), the infamous criminal known as the "Oklahoma Wildman". In its second episode, City Primeval flashes back to the events that landed Mansell in prison, and reveals that he was arrested by Detective Raymond Cruz (Paul Calderón). Later in the series, Raylan visits Cruz to learn more about Mansell. Cruz plays a major role in Out of Sight,as he's called in to help Karen Sisco and eventually arrests Foley. His appearance hints that the events of Out of Sight, or at least a version of them, occurred in-world for Justified.
Bringing Calderón back to play Raymond Cruz isn't just a nod to Out of Sight, but to Elmore Leonard's work. Cruz is the main character of the stories that inspired City Primeval, as he shares an intense rivalry with Mansell that ends in a classic shootout. While Raylan has essentially taken Cruz's place in the City Primeval narrative, the series draws plenty of parallels between the two as they realize they've crossed the line in pursuit of justice. Cruz even tells a story about an encounter with a criminal that mirrors Raylan and Mansell's final confrontation in the series, making for a compelling hour of television.
Sometimes, spin-offs successfully flesh out smaller characters. Other times, they prove why the smaller characters should have remained small.
Another 'Out of Sight' Character Previously Appeared in 'Justified'
Surprisingly, Raymond Cruz is not the first character from Out of Sight to appear on Justified. In the Season 3 episode "Cut Ties," a case leads Raylan to contact Karen Goodall (Carla Gugino), formerly known as Karen Sisco. Gugino had previously played Sisco in the self-titled series Karen Sisco on ABC, which focused on the U.S. Marshal solving crimes in Miami. Despite an all-star cast and the involvement of Elmore Leonard himself, Karen Sisco was canceled after three seasons. That Justified was able to bring the character back was nothing short of a miracle, with Graham Yost showering praise upon Gugino:
"We’re big fans of Carla, she enjoyed playing a marshal, we thought it would be fun to have her play a marshal again. Part of it was, 'Let’s see how much she enjoys being on the show.'"
Despite the door being left open for Gugino to return to Justified, "Cut Ties" was the only episode she appeared on. Still, her appearance further links Elmore Leonard's works in a truly unique way. Unlike the intricate approach that the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes to its movies and television shows, or the winding chronology of a sci-fi franchise like Star Trekor Doctor Who, these projects stand on their own. Justified and Out of Sight are both great in their own right, but this hidden connection will make fans look at them with a new eye.
