Marvel is about to update and upgrade the Juggernaut like never before, as a new character changes the super-strong antihero forever. Juggernaut will never be the same after May this year, after encountering his dark opposite The Mogul...
Marvel Has a New Juggernaut in the Villainous Mogul
Marvel's upcoming Reborn: Ultimate Impact will introduce a quartet of new characters, each based on an existing Marvel hero or villain. One of those characters is Mogul - a new villain who is a radical reinvention of Juggernaut lore. Stefano Caselli's cover shows the character with the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak embedded in his chest, wearing a torn suit and with his eyes glowing with power.
The issue's other new characters are Hostilicus, Sightseer, and a new Wonder Man.
As shown in their individual character portraits and Dike Ruan and Leinil Francis Yu's variant covers, Ultimate Impact will introduce new characters based on Juggernaut, Doctor Strange, Wonder Man and Captain Marvel.
These characters will gain their powers from Origin Boxes - devices from an alternate reality that hold the powers of iconic characters, ready to be gifted to new bearers.
In Juggernaut lore, the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak connects the bearer to a dimension of chaotic energy, governed by the demonic god Cyttorak. The more destruction they cause, the more unstoppable they become. Mogul's Juggernaut form hasn't yet been revealed, but the dome-headed figure lurking behind him on Caselli's cover gives fans a clue of what to expect.
Marvel previously had another villain named the Mogul - Walter Declun, a villainous businessman who played a minor role in Civil War.
Juggernaut Will Never Be the Same
Juggernaut is one of Marvel's most underrated characters, mostly because the default bearer Cain Marko isn't a particularly complicated person. The son of an abusive father, Juggernaut loathes authority, taking out his trauma on step-brother Charles Xavier and his X-Men.
Now, a whole new, separate character will make his grand debut, creating another 'node' from which Marvel can explore Juggernaut's cosmic lore, without needing to involve Cain. Juggernaut just went from a single character to a mini-franchise that Marvel is putting resources into expanding and exploring. That's a big deal because while it's little known, Juggernaut lore has a lot to offer.
Juggernaut Lore Is Marvel's Biggest Untapped Resource
In the comics, Juggernaut is the servant of Cyttorak - a cosmic god who (thanks to a recent Spider-Man story) has his own pantheon of lesser gods, each a 'Scion' of Cyttorak. However, Cyttorak is also a member of a group of eight gods known as the Octessence.
Each of the Octessence is an ancient god, with the eight choosing to settle ownership of Earth by battling it out via their 'Exemplars.' Each god has their own Juggernaut-style empowered servant and mystic totem that empowers the bearer.

The battle between these Exemplars is intended to culminate in the Eighth Day - an apocalyptic event that will result in one of the ancient gods holding dominion over Earth. These Exemplars have almost never been seen in Marvel lore, but serve to give Juggernaut a full rogue's gallery right out of the gate.
Likewise, Juggernaut has plenty of side characters who have yet to really get the spotlight. Avengers Academy's Kid Juggernaut is a descendant of the Juggernaut before Cain Marko, 2021's Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers introduced a child refugee from Cyttorak's dimension called the Survivor, and Juggernaut briefly had a sidekick in the young mutant D-Cel.
What's Next for the Juggernaut
All these elements are just waiting to be brought together in a true franchise, and with the Mogul, Marvel is finally making a sincere push to do that. Empowered with another reality's gem, Mogul is a full-blown new Juggernaut, but with a radically different character wielding that immense power in his own unique way.
Whatever happens next, Juggernaut lore will never be the same - but in the best case scenario, this could catapult the Juggernaut from hanging around the X-Men to helming his own true franchise.
