The Star Wars Battlefront series is completely up in the air. The last entry was released in 2017 and had a catastrophic launch, notably due to its obscene microtransactions and loot boxes, in an era when legislation for them was ramping up, and players were starting to get sick of them.

Although EA eventually disabled them and revamped the game, the damage was done. The Star Wars license did a lot of heavy lifting, but we haven't seen any follow-ups since, despite the Star Wars Battlefront series being in a fairly healthy place for over a decade. This was once a generational series, but now it seems to have stopped dead in its tracks.

On Reddit, fans are both celebrating and lamenting a return to the Star Wars Battlefront franchise. Some don't trust EA to pull it off, but others are willing to give a new entry another chance. Whatever side of the fence you're on, there are a lot of folks in the middle.

Will Star Wars Battlefront 3 Ever Release?

Not Anytime Soon, It Seems

Right out of the gate, select folks are ready and willing to see this franchise return, but are skeptical overall: "Oh, I do dream of Battlefront 3! But unfortunately, I don't expect anything except more of the same from the Ships of Theseus that have taken the names of what we used to enjoy. Bungie, Blizzard, EA, Activision, etc. They're all only these companies in name. The spirit that we all fell in love with left with the people who made the names memorable."

Some fans are just done with the series entirely, and feel like EA has already betrayed their trust: "Honestly, at this point I don't even want Battlefront 3. I want a PVE Helldivers 2/Deep Rock Galactic type multiplayer, random mission type game with upgradable weapons and cosmetics. Let me raid a procedurally generated Imperial base, free prisoners, slice Intel from consoles, steal a ship, assassinate an Imperial officer. Or do all of the above as a Republic trooper against the Separatists."

They make a good point that there are plenty of other multiplayer games on offer at this point, and large-scale warfare isn't necessarily the top genre right now. Even Battlefront 6 is struggling, and EA likely won't see Battlefront 3 as a priority.

There is a chance EA could reconsider, and develop a smaller scale squad-based game, potentially framed around a current popular property like The Mandalorian. But as far as something huge like Battlefront 3, we could be waiting a while.

There Are Plenty Of Battlefront Mods

The Star Wars Battlefront community is currently thriving, specifically due to the sheer number of Battlefront mods available. There are total conversions, and even crossovers, featuring other IP like Halo. The best part? It's all free with a copy of the game.

While we wait for Star Wars Battlefront to make a triumphant return, fans remain cautious about how EA will approach it. At the very least, Star Wars as a whole is too big to fail, so we could see a wide-scale multiplayer game in the universe far far away sometime in the future, just not from EA.
