Gotham’s most notorious villain creeped its way to streaming sooner than expected. “Joker: Folie á Deux” became available to watch from home starting Oct. 29, less than a month after its theatrical release.

The film is now available to rent/buy on digital platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV.

Todd Phillips’ offbeat comic book musical, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous supervillain, alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, flopped at the box office. Ticket sales are lagging far behind expectations since its release earlier this month, helping explain the expedited streaming release date.

There’s no question that a significant chunk of DC fans who let poor reviews stop them from seeing the $200 million sequel in theaters, will still opt to see the long-awaited, Gaga-starring film from home.

In his review, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman writes that “the concept is audacious but the execution less so in a movie that takes a step back from the danger of ‘Joker.'”

It “may be ambitious and superficially outrageous,” he continues, “but at heart it’s an overly cautious sequel.”

The film sees Phoenix reprise his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck (who later becomes Batman’s notorious foe) and conspire with Gaga‘s equally twisted Harley. The story begins in the famed Arkham Asylum — where Joker is locked up at the end of the first film — as Arthur has a deranged “meet cute” with Harley. After their chance encounter, they fall madly, deeply in love and plan to break out of their straight jackets to take on the world beyond their padded cells.
