DC Just Gave Me The Equal Superman Vs Lex Luthor Fight I Never Thought Would Be Possible

2 hours ago 2

Superman & Lois places Lex Luthor and the DC hero against one another in a balanced fight I never thought would be possible in the show due to the Man of Steel's considerable powers. Throughout its four-season-long run, Superman & Lois has done right by Superman in terms of showcasing his immense powers, but also grounding them when possible. As such, while having his heart torn out in the Superman & Lois season 4 premiere and later replaced by a human one has affected Clark, he's still been shown as capable of taking on any regular human with ease.

Unsurprisingly, though, Superman & Lois season 4, episode 6 proves that Lex Luthor isn't what you'd class as any regular human, with the villain setting up a plan to neutralize Clark's powers in order to even out the playing field. While this initially looks set to reveal another of his trademark elaborate traps for the Kent family to struggle against, something very different actually ends up happening in the live-action Superman show: namely, a brutal fistfight between Superman and his nemesis, set to the suitable punk rock tunes of IDLES' "When the Lights Go Out".

I Never Thought Superman & Lois Would Get To Have Lex Luthor & Superman Just Brawling With One Another

Seeing Superman And Lex Luthor In A Fistfight Involving No Powers Wasn't On My Bingo Card For The Show

Superman & Lois season 4, episode 6 lets Lex Luthor and Superman duke it out in a simple, no-holds-barred physical fight by having Luthor set up the streetlights of the road they have their confrontation on to turn to red light energy at his signal, thus taking away the Man of Steel's powers. However, Clark isn't put off by losing his superhuman abilities, and indeed being rendered without his superstrength appears to encourage him to go all out, with the pair exchanging some pretty intense punches, and Kent at one point putting Lex through a car window for good measure.

The battle concludes with Clark - now mid-way through choking Luthor out - noticing his family, and leaving the now-beaten Lex without doing any more damage. It's a scene that works to add a nice note of action to the series while also proving that Clark doesn't need his powers to beat Luthor in a balanced fight, even if Superman does show some considerable guilt for his actions afterward.

Though it seemed possible - or even a bit inevitable - that the two would have a physical confrontation of some sort, the nature of Superman's powers made it look as though this would have to just be a battle between Superman and a Lex-controlled Doomsday, or a version of Lex with some form of technical or chemical upgrade to his own skillset. As such, watching the two simply beating each other up came as something of a surprise - though an exciting surprise to be sure.

Superman & Lois' Lex Luthor Vs Superman Fight Showed A Different Side Of The Show's Hero

Letting Superman Go All Out Fighting Lex Lets Us See Clark In A Different And More Human Way

Superman Flying In The Skies

Superman & Lois follows a version of Clark Kent who is as traditionally buttoned up and moral as you might expect from an iteration of the character who directly adapts the comic Man of Steel's intensely kind and compassionate nature, being a deeply caring husband, father, and friend as much as he is a valiant superhero. The show's Clark has been a hero for well over a decade by the time of the first episode, and it's clear his extensive career has only further solidified his desire to do the right thing.

It's clear this time has also reinforced the lessons Clark learned about controlling himself and his powers that he learned back in his youth, and which he has repeatedly tried to instill in his sons regarding the responsibility that superskills warrant. As such, we generally see a version of Superman who is constantly keeping himself in check - which is a big part of what makes his all-out fight in Superman & Lois season 4, episode 6 all the more special, since Clark knows he doesn't have to hold back like he usually would have to against a human combatant.

Seeing this intense rage and the intense violence that follows gives an insight into how aggravated Clark is about everything he and his loved ones have been through in the season thus far - with Lex's attempt to assassinate Lana Lang seemingly being the last straw. Similarly, it also seems to provide a glimpse into how taxing the years of his superhero career and being careful with those who were actively trying to kill him has been, providing even more of a fully three-dimensional look at the hero in the show's last chapter.

Superman & Lois Season 4 Has Already Set Up The Second Lex Luthor Vs Superman Fight

Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6's Ending Makes Lex Vs Clark Round 2 Seem Impending

Lex Luthor looking offscreen in Superman & Lois

Superman & Lois made sure to immediately provide for those of us already wanting more when it comes to Superman and Lex Luthor fighting one another, as the ending of episode 6 directly sets up another round for the hero and villain. Lex's ally Amanda visits him in the aftermath of the fight between him and Clark, and tells Luthor he was going about his conflict with Lois and Superman the wrong way, asserting that they need to get him a "killer suit" for his future confrontations.

All in all, this looks to set up the show adapting Lex's Iron Man-esque warsuit. Since the suit in the comics is specifically made to stand up against Superman's Kryptonian skillset, it stands to reason that the series' version of the suit will be able to do so as well, making Luthor able to face not only Clark but likely also his sons - and Steel and Starlight, if this indeed makes Lex the show's final villain for the heroes to deal with.

Though there's plenty of time for many other twists and turns to crop up in Superman & Lois - and it's still entirely possible that Doomsday will return at some point as either friend or foe, which will change the balance of powers immensely, whatever the case may be - the stage already looks to be thoroughly set for a rematch between Superman and Luthor that is even more high stakes than the first fight. Hopefully, any follow-up battles will match or otherwise beat the standard set by the exciting brawl between the pair in Superman & Lois season 4, episode 6.
