Amazon Prime VideoThe upcoming film Jack Ryan: Ghost War hasn't even been released yet, but star, producer, and co-writer John Krasinski just revealed a major update about the franchise.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Krasinski confirmed that the Jack Ryan TV series has concluded, but the story might not be over after the film, Ghost War, is released on May 20. He has realized that "being in a different format just means you can tell different kinds of stories," and it feels like there are definitely "more stories to tell" in this world.
"I would love to [continue Jack Ryan as a film series]. I think that we all found that being in a different format just means you can tell different kinds of stories. I think we have more stories to tell."
Director Andrew Bernstein is glad to hear that Krasinski is mulling over some sequel ideas in his head. First and foremost, the only reason there should be another film is if there's a story worth telling, according to Bernstein.
Reuniting the cast and crew for Ghost War felt like a natural progression for the franchise because "we had a story to tell that made sense for the character, and for the world, and the world keeps changing." He admitted he's very "excited to jump back in" for a sequel if Prime Video gives the greenlight.
"I think we all have ideas, but the most important one is I hope John has ideas cooking up in his head, like you told me he does. I think it’s super important that we have a story to tell. That’s the most important. It’s why we came back to make this movie. We had a story to tell that made sense for the character, and for the world, and the world keeps changing. So there’s going to be great stories, and great character stories. So I think we’re all excited to jump back in and do it again."
Before the filmmakers can turn their attention to a sequel, though, they want to make sure Ghost War is a hit and satisfies viewers' appetite for more Jack Ryan stories. Bernstein said that he and the rest of his team "loved" working on Jack Ryan: Ghost War and want to make more, "but we have to get this one out and then we'll see what happens."
"One would hope [Jack Ryan continues after Ghost War]. Yeah, listen, we all loved making this movie. I think you can tell by the character interaction, they get along well in real life on the screen. There’s a lot more of Jack Ryan’s story to tell, and if people dig this movie, which we hope they will, we’re hopeful to make more of them. But we have to get this one out and then we’ll see what happens. But I know everyone’s super excited to do it again."
If another film gets made, a big question is whether Bernstein and Krasinski will lean on Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels or create an entirely original story. During ScreenRant's interview, Bernstein explained that the best way to move forward would likely be by taking the "spirit of Tom Clancy and apply it to a new story."
He would love to adapt another of Clancy's novels, but he acknowledges that the real world "is giving us so many great stories to tell." It's way too early to figure out what direction a potential sequel might take in terms of the plot, though.
"It’s interesting. I mean, Clancy was so amazing. I feel like we can take the spirit of Tom Clancy, and sort of apply it to a new story. But again, I think it’ll be in the brains of those who are creating this story in the script. But I’ve loved his books. I’d love to sort of adapt another one of them, but I think also, the world is giving us so many great stories to tell."
Ghost War isn't the first film in the franchise. From 1990 to 2014, five Jack Ryan movies were released in theaters, including The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears, and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Four years later, Prime Video debuted a new Jack Ryan adaptation, but for the small screen. John Krasinski, following in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine from the movies, stars as a CIA analyst who heads out into the field to investigate shocking cases and prevent dangerous criminals from carrying out their bad deeds.
The Jack Ryan TV show garnered mostly positive reviews, with an average critic score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned nominations at the Emmys, SAG Awards, and Critics' Choice Awards. Prime Video ended the series in 2023 after four seasons.
Krasinski is reprising his role as Jack Ryan for the film Ghost War, which also stars Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, Betty Gabriel, Sienna Miller, Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, and JJ Feild. Aside from appearing on camera, Krasinski also serves as an executive producer with Allyson Seeger, Andrew Form, Carlton Cuse, and Graham Roland.
