Shealyn Scott is a Senior Writer at Screen Rant. She has been writing for the site since 2024, focused on network, reality, streaming, and classic television.
A creative writer, journalist, and lover of the written word in all its forms, Shealyn enjoys deconstructing scenes from her favorite shows, using context clues and historical precedent to predict major plot points (which, due to her successful track record, has sparked rumors of clairvoyancy).
As an award-winning student journalist, Shealyn spent her college years advocating for the humanities while studying English Literature. Her love of storytelling propelled her to expand her degree with minors in Writing and History, believing life to be a mere collection of stories that can be framed in as many ways as a movie scene.
As a Senior member of the TV Team, Shealyn treats the series she covers like books, analyzing every line, camera angle, and lighting choice. Thankfully, her personal mission statement lines up perfectly with Screen Rant: every creative work deserves just as much thought from the viewer as it received from its creator.

Jisoo has finally made her highly-anticipated return to acting with Netflix's Boyfriend on Demand. As a member of the best-selling K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, Jisoo initially rose to fame in the music industry. The singer-songwriter pivoted in 2021, however, with Snowdrop marking her debut as a K-drama female lead. Yet, Boyfriend on Demand may be her most exciting role yet.

Since it was announced, the romantic comedy has been one of the most exciting K-dramas coming to Netflix in 2026. Boyfriend on Demand has a simple but strong premise, bolstered by a star-studded cast and major distributor. What truly sets Boyfriend on Demand apart, however, is its balance; there are plenty of clichés, but they're incorporated with one fascinating twist.

Boyfriend On Demand Is Now Streaming On Netflix

The Rom-Com Marks Jisoo's Return To Acting

Boyfriend on Demand follows a straightforward rom-com formula: a woman is overworked and begins considering her romantic options, unaware her perfect match is already right in front of her. In Netflix's dystopian K-drama romance, however, the titular app (Boyfriend on Demand) offers virtual reality dates that transport the protagonist across different time periods, locations, and occupations in pursuit of love.

Soon, a chasm forms between the main character's romantic exploits and her very sense of reality. A once pragmatic, diligent worker becomes consumed by her romantic fantasies, and the addictive nature of the app only makes it more difficult to pull away. There to ground her, however, is her rival coworker— whom she finally begins seeing in a new light.

While the K-drama's sci-fi elements may seem unsettling at first glance, Boyfriend on Demand is still a comforting romantic comedy. The dark implications of the central dating technology are mostly swept under the rug, allowing the main romance to unfurl as a pleasant comedy of errors and exploration of enemies-to-lovers tension rather than a gritty, borderline cyberpunk act of rebellion.

Despite its ambitious storytelling, Boyfriend on Demand is compacted to a mere 10 episodes, yet it never feels rushed nor unnecessarily drawn out. Aside from the VR dating, there are overarching plots related to the main characters' jobs as webtoon producers, as well as personal conflicts that add high stakes to Boyfriend on Demand's unconventional romance.

Who Stars In Boyfriend On Demand

At the heart of Boyfriend on Demand is Jisoo as Seo Mi-rae. She begins as a devoted webtoon producer whose dedication to her work leaves very little time for a personal life, including dating. After trying Boyfriend on Demand, Mi-rae finds herself drawn to the uncanny, perfect romances created in the app, while her real life suffers for it.

Acting opposite Jisoo is an iconic K-drama male lead: Seo In-guk. Known primarily for romantic dramas like Doom at Your Service and thrillers like Death's Game, Seo In-guk portrays Park Kyeong-nam in Boyfriend on Demand. Although Kyeong-nam and Mi-rae start out on the wrong foot, he becomes an unlikely suitor in the real world who juxtaposes her fake dates.

Mi-rae's virtual boyfriends, however, are all legendary romantic leads from other K-dramas. From Lee Jae-wook (Extraordinary You) to Kim Young-dae (Shooting Stars), iconic actors play different archetypes in Boyfriend on Demand's VR system. The cameos span countless scenarios, including a hospital workplace relationship, a college crush, a period piece love story, and a romance with a rich and powerful CEO-type.

Rounding out the Boyfriend on Demand supporting cast of characters are Gong Min-jeung (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), Kim Ah-young (Welcome To Samdal-ri), Ha Young (Doona!), and Yoo In-na (Touch Your Heart). Ranging from Boyfriend on Demand's digital hostess to additional coworkers and friends, the K-drama's ensemble cast make Seo Mi-rae and Park Kyeong-nam feel much more well-rounded as characters.

Jisoo's Acting Career Continues To Grow

Boyfriend On Demand Could Be Her Best Project Yet

Jisoo in Netflix's K-drama Boyfriend on Demand.

Boyfriend on Demand makes the perfect K-drama binge, but the Netflix original romance has broader implications for Jisoo's career. The idol's former roles have been incredibly divisive, with Snowdrop being shrouded in controversy from its premiere. Jisoo's following role in zombie rom-com Newtopia was better received, though it was still regarded as an incredibly forgettable drama.

With Boyfriend on Demand, however, Jisoo has taken a major step up in her acting career. Out of BLACKPINK's TV roles, Seo Mi-rae is sure to be remembered as one of the best. Jisoo's talents truly shine as Mi-rae, but her anthological virtual dates display her range, essentially offering the audience mini versions of Jisoo in various classic K-drama roles.

Similarly, her chemistry with Seo In-guk is nothing short of electric. Plus, leading such a major K-drama on a platform like Netflix will undoubtedly pave the way for Jisoo to earn more starring roles.

Transitioning from singing to acting is common in the K-drama industry, but that doesn't make it any less challenging. Jisoo seems to have finally found her footing with Boyfriend on Demand, which is a good professional omen. There's no telling what the future will hold, but Boyfriend on Demand definitely bodes well for Jisoo's career.
