Jill Duggar Details Grief Journey While Visiting Late Daughter Isla's Grave

Jill Duggar Dillard is continuing to process her grief.

Two years after the stillbirth of her and husband Derick Dillard's daughter Isla Marie, the 19 Kids and Counting alum shared insight into how they are honoring their baby’s memory alongside a glimpse at a recent visit to her grave.

“Life is a constant combination of ups and downs, joy and sorrow, roses and thorns,” Jill wrote in an Instagram post shared on Feb. 27. “I’m thankful for God’s faithfulness through all.”

The 34-year-old—who shares sons Israel, 10, Samuel, 8, and Frederick, 3, with Derick—noted that grief comes in waves and during those more difficult moments, she’s found comfort in visiting her late daughter’s grave.

“Anyone who has experienced loss knows that it’s often in the quiet moments when the waves come stronger and we are reminded more of the hole left by a loss,” Jill wrote in the post, which featured a selfie of her sitting on the grass beside Isla’s tombstone. “Or sometimes it’s felt deeper at a place that just gives you the space to feel.”

Referencing the somber snapshot, Jill added, “I’m so grateful to have a place to go to remember our daughter.”

Aside from visiting Isla’s grave, the former reality star said she’s been navigating her grief by leaning into the support of her family.

“So thankful for the recent happy moments too!” she wrote. “The sun continues to shine & I love trying out my kids cooking! Recent recipes included maple cinnamon swirl bread & Froyo dots!”

In addition to sharing photos of her kids’ recipes, Jill shared a glimpse into some other joyful family moments, including a sweet photo of Derick, 36, lying on the floor while their son leaned over his shoulder and Jill’s cuddle sesh with one of their boys.

The Dillards shared the stillbirth of their daughter on Instagram in April 2024, writing, “From the moment we found out we were pregnant, we couldn’t wait to meet our baby. Isla was much loved from the start, and her 3 big brothers were so excited to introduce her to their world. We appreciate your prayers as we continue to grieve and heal from the loss of our little Isla Marie.”

Since then, Jill has continued to honor Isla by sharing memories from her pregnancy journey, but she also hasn’t shied away from talking about the harder moments. In fact, Jill marked the one-year anniversary of Isla’s stillbirth last year by detailing the day they had to say goodbye to their daughter.

“On this morning one year ago, we were prepping for our daughter’s delivery after finding out just days before that she had went on to join Jesus in heaven,” she wrote last March. “Derick’s mom was caring for our boys and my mom drove us to the hospital where a couple of my sisters and a friend joined us.”

“We are so grateful for all those not pictured who wrapped their arms and prayers around us,” she added, “and continue to provide us with support as we walk this road nobody ever wants to walk.”

And in August, on what would’ve been Isla’s first birthday, Jill spoke about how difficult it was to not see her daughter “toddling along with the big bros.”

"We don’t know exactly what caused the loss," she wrote, "but after lots of testing, they concluded that the most likely cause was a fluke subchorionic hematoma/hemorrhage that wasn’t detected until later, so nothing likely would have changed things."

Still, Jill was clear that she was “forever grateful for the opportunity we had to carry our sweet girl for 4 short months.”

While Isla’s absence has certainly been felt, Jill and Derick have also been focused on creating happy memories with their three boys. Keep reading to see more family moments with the Dillards.
