Jessie Buckley On How She “Broke My Toe” While Filming ‘The Bride’: “So Swollen”

1 week ago 9

Although her The Bride! character could easily just sew another appendage on, Jessie Buckley took a little longer to heal from a behind-the-scenes injury.

The 2x Oscar nominee revealed she sustained a broken bone while making the Maggie Gyllenhaal-helmed take on The Bride of Frankenstein, which is set in 1930s Chicago and stars Christian Bale as her monstrous romantic lead.

“The hardest scene, just because I actually broke my toe, was like the last week of shooting, and I was so tired,” she explained to Entertainment Weekly. “[In the scene] there was this gun firing, and I just overextended my toe by falling backwards too many times. And I had to come in and do the scene the next day, and my toe was the size of a tree.”

Buckley added, “It was just so swollen, but that’s also fun. And I’m meant to have one leg shorter than the other anyway, so it probably helped.”

The Bride! sees a lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travel to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!
