Jason Momoa is about to fulfill one of his lifelong comic book dreams. The actor best known for playing Aquaman in the previous DC regime will now portray the antihero Lobo in the new superhero universe from James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.

Momoa will star alongside Milly Alcock in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for DC Studios as Lobo, IndieWire has learned. Lobo is an alien mercenary and bounty hunter from the utopian planet of Czarnia in the DC comics.

Momoa, on his Instagram, shared a screenshot of a quote from a prior interview in which he said that if anyone ever called asking him to play Lobo or to audition, “I’m there.” He tagged the post simply, “They called.”

“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is being directed by Craig Gillespie (“I, Tonya,” “Cruella”) and stars “House of the Dragon” actress Alcock as Kara Zor-el. Matthias Schoenaerts is the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley is also starring in the film.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for the film, but it has a script by actress Ana Nogueira. The film is inspired specifically by Tom King’s 2022 comic series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” and it will fit into the larger DC universe of stories Gunn and Safran are building, starting with Gunn’s “Superman” arriving next summer.

Momoa most recently starred in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” reprising his role as Arthur Curry in what was the last film in what was formerly known as the DCEU. He had also made a cameo in “The Flash” and in 2024’s “The Fall Guy.” He’ll next be seen in another Warner Bros. film, “Minecraft: The Movie,” opposite Jack Black, and he’s returning as the villain for “Fast X: Part 2.” Momoa is also known for his roles on Apple TV+’s “See” and in “Dune.”

Momoa in 2023 in conjunction with the release of the “Aquaman” sequel said the future of his character in Gunn and Safran’s universe was “not looking too good.”

“I love this character and [want to] play it for a long time,” Momoa told Men’s Health. “I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.”

While it won’t be Arthur Curry, he’ll get another chance in the DC Universe.
