Yui Mok/PA Images/INSTARimagesJason Momoa will appear in Supergirl as the supervillain, Lobo, which has been a dream for DC fans for years. James Gunn has launched a new DC Universe with Superman, and it's unlikely there would be so much anticipation for a Supergirl movie without the jolt of energy he's provided.
While Gunn is only producing the film, it already feels like his hands are all over it. The casting of Jason Momoa as Lobo is just one of the examples of how Gunn seems to have his finger on the pulse of pop culture. It's a match made in heaven and one that fans have always suggested.
Jason Momoa As Lobo Was A Huge Fancast For Years
People have called for Jason Momoa to be cast as Lobo, one of the major villains in Superman's rogues' gallery, for years. For one, Lobo sure does look a lot like Momoa. The character has always been drawn with long, wavy black hair, a sly grin, dark eyes, and a huge frame.
Frankly, Jason Momoa as Lobo is such an obvious casting choice that many assumed it would never happen. As an anti-hero, Lobo also fits well into the character range that Momoa has proven he's comfortable with, such as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones or Dante Reyes in Fast X.
Why Jason Momoa Is Replacing Aquaman With Lobo
Despite how perfect Jason Momoa seems for the role of Lobo, most people considered it a dream rather than anything that could ever actually happen. It didn't seem possible because Momoa already had a role in the DCEU, a big one. He played Aquaman in Justice League and two standalone films.
Aquaman is no minor character; he was arguably the most successful character the DCEU had before Gunn tapped in. Lobo was always the character that Momoa wanted to play, saying, "I've wanted that role forever" (via ComicBookMovie). He fell into Aquaman, but it's Superman's rival that he's always loved.
How Big Of A Role Will Lobo Have In Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow?
It's unclear how big a role Lobo is going to have in Supergirl, because as we've all learned from these superhero films over the years, just because a big-name actor is playing a big-name character does not necessarily guarantee screentime. So it's possible that Lobo only shows up for a bit in the film.
Lobo has a unique history with the Superman family and is sometimes a villain, but also sometimes a reluctant ally, so he could very well have his own film eventually. Notably, Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) is also cast as a villain, and as a human trafficker, Supergirl may be using him as the big bad.
