Jamie Foxx Says He's Filled With “Pure Joy” After First Stage Appearance in 18 Years
Jamie Foxx is sharing the details of his medical journey for the first time.
While filming Back in Action in Atlanta in April 2023, the Oscar-winning actor was hospitalized with a mysterious illness , which he now confirms was a brain bleed that turned into a stroke.
“April 11, I was having a bad headache, and I asked my boy for a Aspirin. I realized quickly that when you’re in a medical emergency, your boys don’t know what the f***k to do,” Jamie said as he became emotional during his Netflix special What Had Happened Was Dec.10, per People. "Before I could get the Aspirin [snaps fingers] I went out. I don’t remember 20 days."
The Ray actor said that he was still experiencing the headache, so his friends took him to a doctor, who then gave him a cortisone shot for the pain. However, Jamie said that his sister, Deidra Dixon knew something was wrong, so she took him to Atlanta Georgia’s Piedmont Hospital, where he would get his scary prognosis.
"Ya’ll saved my life just 400 yards away from here in Piedmont Hospital. They put me back together again," Jamie told the crowd, adding o his sister, "She didn’t know anything about Piedmont Hospital, but she had a hunch that some angels [were] in there.”
And while his health scare had a positive outcome, Jamie said there were some low points, including upon his arrival when a doctor at the medical facility delivered Deidra “some horrible news about her brother.”
“He said, ‘He’s having a brain bleed that has led to a stroke,” Jamie explained. “‘If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him.’”
He added that Deidra "knelt down outside the operating room and prayed the whole time."
While they couldn’t pinpoint where the bleed was coming from, the Jamie Foxx Show alum said his sister was told that it would be a hard and long road to recovery.
As he recalled a medical professional telling Deidra, "‘We didn't find where it was coming from, but he is having a stroke. He may be able to make a full recovery but it’s going to be the worst year of his life.'”
Jamie added, “That’s what it was Atlanta. You finally got the story. You saved my life."
The Django Unchained star once again became emotional as he recalled being out of it for 20 days and having to relearn his fine motor skills like walking and talking when he came back to following surgery while at a rehabilitation center in Chicago.
"20 days I don’t remember, but on May 4th I woke up,” Jamie revealed. “And I when I woke up I found myself in a wheelchair. I couldn’t walk, in a wheelchair, and I was like, 'Why the f***k am I in a wheelchair?’ I’m just coming out of s**t.”

Jamie credited his family—which includes his sister as well as daughters Corinne Foxx, 30, and Anelise Bishop, 16—for keeping his condition private.
“They didn’t want you to see me like that. And I didn’t want you to see me like that,” Jamie said as he became emotional. “I want you to see me like this.”
For the duration of his hospitalization, Jamie’s condition went unknown. In July 2023, the “Unpredictable” singer stepped in front of the camera for his fans for the first time to thank his family and shut down rumors about his health. Just five months later, Jamie made his first public appearance while accepting the Vanguard Award at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & AAPI Achievements.
In October, Jamie shared an emotional post after making his return to the stage for the three-night engagement in Atlanta where he filmed the Netflix special.
"God is good," he captioned an Oct. 3 carousel of images on Instagram . "As I post these pictures, my heart and my soul is filled with nothing but pure joy…on October 3 fourth and fifth I had an opportunity to tell my side of the story and there was no better place than Atlanta Georgia."
He continued, "I have to thank you Atlanta you showed up and you showed out, I haven’t been on stage in 18 years but I needed the stage and I needed an audience that was made up of nothing but pure love and that’s what you were."
