As James Gunn's DCU continues to take shape, it's worth highlighting that there are already two core members of the Justice League in place. According to co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn, the DCU is rebooting the entire DC entertainment franchise as far as movies, TV, and video games are concerned.
The Justice League has long been the foundational team within DC Comics, featuring not only the big three core heroes of that shared universe, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but also a handful of other prominent heroes that are widely recognized thanks to comics, animated shows, video games, and the previous DCEU.
Now, as the DCU begins to pick up steam and release its pioneering projects, it's time to look at who will be joining the Justice League lineup and who is still left to appear within the DCU.
Superman Will Definitely Be Central To The DCU's Justice League
First in the lineup is certainly the most recognizable, Superman. Superman starred in his own feature film in 2025, the first feature-length film of the DCU proper, starring David Corenswet as the mild-mannered Clark Kent who transforms in the blink of an eye to become the Man of Steel.
That film established that Superman is Earth's most powerful hero, and he already possesses the necessary attributes to make him a strong candidate to lead the Justice League. However, without the rest of the team to support and work alongside him, this Superman is presently a one-man show... mostly.
John Stewart Will Be This Justice League's Green Lantern
While Creature Commandos became the first official DCU project in general, and Peacemaker season 2 slotted in to become the first live-action series within that universe, Lanterns is set to be the first new live-action series in the DCU, without a prior season that existed in the DCEU.
Convoluted as that introduction to the show may be, the contents are largely still a mystery. It's set to release on HBO, which suggests this is prestige TV. It has been compared to True Detective for its dark and gritty style, and it focuses on two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan, as played by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.
While Hal Jordan is the legendary original human Green Lantern of the comics, and one who is frequently tied to the Justice League, it seems clear that John Stewart will be taking the reins going forward, especially with the character being confirmed to appear in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie alongside Corenswet's Superman.
All of this adds up to suggest that John Stewart will also be joining the Justice League in the future, though how he gets from the story in Lanterns to that point is yet to be explored on screen.
The Justice Gang Could Become Part Of The DCU Justice League
Beyond the usual Justice League lineup, the DCU has also introduced an unusual supporting team known as the Justice Gang. In Superman, there is a group of sponsored heroes led by Guy Gardner's Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion, who work as a team to take down villains and monsters.
The team is made up of Guy Gardner, alongside Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced, and Mr. Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi. In the comics, there have been times when Gardner was the Justice League's Green Lantern, but seeing how the DCU is shaping up so far, it feels unlikely that he will be called upon to play that role in the future of the films.
On a different note, both Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific have been a part of the Justice League, most notably in the DC Animated Universe, where Hawkgirl is shown to be a founding member of the team, and Mr. Terrific has been a part of the broader lineup. Seeing as the DCU has introduced the Justice Gang so early on, it feels likely that they will have some connection to the JLA down the line.
Whether that means that both Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific join the team, or whether the lineup will be radically altered or expanded, remains to be seen. However, seeing the overwhelming positive response to Gathegi's Mr. Terrific, it is possible that this character will have a bright future in the DCU.
At the end of Superman, Metamorpho, as played by Anthony Carrigan, is also seen to join the Justice Gang, which could make him a potential candidate for a spot in the DCU's Justice League down the line, but that would certainly be a break from tradition.
There Are Still Some Core Members Of The Team Due To Join The DCU
Beyond Superman and Green Lantern, there are several notable members of the team still missing from the DCU. When the team was initially formed in DC Comics, it frequently featured seven core heroes: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and the Flash.
So far, the DCU has confirmed projects in the works for both Batman, with his debut expected to be in The Brave and the Bold, and Wonder Woman, who is set to star in her own movie. Beyond that, there remain a few central characters who have yet to be announced, or even have projects confirmed for the DCU.
That being said, Jason Momoa, who notably played Aquaman throughout the DCEU, is returning to the DCU to play the role of Lobo, and he is set to debut in this role in the upcoming Supergirl movie. Depending on how much Gunn wants to shake things up in the DCU (and it appears that he is more than willing to break the mold, considering his track record with superheroes), either Lobo or Supergirl, or both, could also be potential candidates for the DCU.
James Gunn previously directed and wrote the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for the MCU. This superhero lineup featured notable changes from the comics and altered powers of central figures, with that team formation changing drastically again in the final film.
The one thing that points to a traditional Justice League lineup in the DCU comes from Creature Commandos. In a flash-forward scene that sees the world's greatest heroes dead, it includes all the traditional Justice League heroes. Now, that storyline shouldn't come to pass due to the rest of the events in Creature Commandos, but it does suggest that the DCU may be looking to set up a traditional JLA team.
More than likely, however, this was just a fun detail included in the show to give a nod to the audience and build excitement for what is to come in the DCU. James Gunn is still laying the foundations for this universe, and there is a lot still to introduce, so what exactly the DCU's Justice League will look like is hard to say.
