iVanky FusionDock Ultra Review, The Most Expensive And Powerful Dock On The Market

Laptops have finally gotten fast enough to be true desktop replacements. The one problem is that no laptop can connect to everything on your desk. A MacBook might only give you two or three USB-C ports, so you are going to need a dock.

So I got the iVANKY FusionDock Ultra, which as far as I know is the most expensive and most powerful dock currently on the market. It is $649. I want to explain what makes it special, and then I want to talk almost all of you out of buying one.

Why One Dock Costs $20 and Another Costs $649

When I bought my first MacBook Pro and started shopping for hubs, I could not understand the price range. The answer is bandwidth, and it is the single most important thing to understand before you spend a dollar on a dock.

If you are plugging in a keyboard, a mouse, or a printer, none of this matters. Those devices will work exactly the same over a $6 cable. The trouble starts with the expensive peripherals: external SSDs, a fast network connection, and the big one, monitors. You might own a 4K display, but a cheap cable or a cheap dock can quietly limit it to 1080p. You might own a 120 Hz panel that is being fed 60 Hz, or even 30. macOS will not warn you that any of this is happening, and in some cases there is no place in the operating system to even look it up. You end up blaming your laptop for feeling slow when the real problem was the $30 hub sitting behind your monitor.

Do the Math Before You Buy Anything

Start with your own laptop. Apple has changed port speeds almost every year, sometimes putting different speeds on different ports of the same machine, so there is no clean rule I can give you here. The vast majority of Macs in use right now have USB-C ports that move data at 40 Gb/s. With the M4 and M5 generations, Apple moved to Thunderbolt 5, which looks identical but doubles that to 80 Gb/s. The fastest way to find out what you have is to type your exact laptop model into an AI chatbot and ask.

Then add up your monitors, because they are what actually eat the bandwidth, and almost nobody accounts for them:

  • 4K at 60 Hz: about 13 Gb/s
  • 4K at 120 Hz: about 26 Gb/s
  • 6K at 60 Hz: about 30 Gb/s
  • 6K at 60 Hz in 10-bit HDR: about 38 Gb/s

Look at that last number. A single 10-bit HDR display consumes essentially an entire 40 Gb/s port on its own. My own desk runs four 4K 60 Hz monitors, which is 52 Gb/s, plus a 10-gigabit Ethernet adapter, which puts me around 62 Gb/s. That leaves roughly 18 Gb/s to share among every other thing I plug in, and honestly, it has been plenty. I have some of the fastest SSDs on the market and they still copy at full speed.

What the $649 Actually Buys You

Two things, really. The first is that this dock connects to your Mac with two upstream Thunderbolt 5 cables instead of one. They are magnetic, so they snap together into what feels like a single cable spaced exactly right for a MacBook's two ports, and they pull apart and stack vertically if you want to run the dock off something like a Mac Studio. iVANKY rates the dock at up to 120 Gb/s in its boost mode, and the practical result is that it can drive four 6K 60 Hz displays natively, which very few docks on the planet can do. There is a DisplayPort 2.1 output, HDMI, four downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, UHS-II SD and microSD slots, and 140 W of charging back to the laptop.

The second thing is the one I actually care about: 10-gigabit Ethernet is built in. Right now I am using an external Thunderbolt to 10-gigabit adapter that cost me over $200, is about half the size of this entire dock, and gets hot enough that you do not want to touch it. I pulled a huge file off my Synology NAS through the Ultra's built-in port and got 750 MB/s, which is exactly the 10-gigabit speed I was getting from the separate adapter. That adapter is now in a drawer.

Here Is Why You Should Not Buy It

My current laptop is an M3 Max MacBook Pro. It does not even have Thunderbolt 5. This dock is completely overkill for the machine I plugged it into, and I knew that before I ordered it. I bought it because I am about to buy the next Apple laptop the moment it ships, and I am about to replace my monitors with better ones, and at that point I will blow past what my older dock can carry. I am buying for a setup I do not own yet.

You almost certainly should not do that. Work backwards instead. Figure out how fast your ports are, count your monitors, note their resolution and refresh rate, and see how much bandwidth is left for everything else. If you are running one or two ordinary 4K 60 Hz displays, a far cheaper dock will serve you perfectly and you will never notice a difference. If you want three or four displays, or high refresh rates, or anything past 4K, that is when the expensive tier starts to make sense. The FusionDock Max 1 is $299.99 and the newer FusionDock Max 2 is $399.99, and both cover that ground. The Ultra's real separation from those two is the 10-gigabit Ethernet and the fourth 6K display, and if neither of those is in your future, you are spending a few hundred dollars for nothing.

I have been using an older iVANKY dock every single day for years and it has been one of my favorite pieces of gear, so I recommend the brand without hesitation. I just do not recommend this particular model to most people.

One More Thing

The speed readout I used to check those file transfers is not something macOS gives you. It comes from Better Dock, an app I built that replaces the macOS Dock. Among a lot of other things, it keeps file transfer dialogs pinned where you can see them instead of losing them behind a window, and it shows you the actual transfer speed while a copy is running.
