Animal Crossing frowning villagers over a field of flowers

Animal Crossing: New Horizons are bewildered about why Nintendo didn't make the lawnmower an actual functional tool. Reddit user iwillbiteuu reached out to the community on the Animal Crossing subReddit, asking for advice on clearing a field of flowers. The user wanted to build in the space and was hoping that they wouldn't have to remove them one by one, since that would be a tedious process. Unfortunately, it seems that there's no other way to remove flowers and weeds quickly, though the comments are still full of encouragement and some ideas, like using the garbage can to discard unwanted foliage.

But Mountain-Level9672 left a comment that resonates with the Animal Crossing community, questioning Nintendo's choice to not make the lawnmower a functional item in the game. They write that when they first started playing, they immediately bought the lawnmower, hoping that they could use it to quickly get rid of flowers and weeds like its real-world counterpart, but "realized later it's not a usable tool like [the] shovel."

The game overlooking this very obvious way to use the lawnmower seems like an oversight on behalf of Nintendo. The Redditor continues in despair, asking, "IT'S RIGHT THERE THO NINTENDO, SO WHY NOT?!"

A Lawnmower In ACNH Would Make Sense To Remove Unwanted Flowers

Players Are Often Disappointed To Find That It's Useless

Currently, the only way to remove flowers and weeds in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is to pick them up one at a time. Although Leif will remove weeds for a hefty sum of 100K Bells, there need to be over 300 weeds on the players' island to trigger this, making it functionally useless and too expensive for the typical player.

The Lawnmower is a simple decoration, but some fans thought it was a tool that could be used to mow the lawn and easily remove flowers. This isn't the first time an ACNH player has stumbled upon the useless lawnmower to their extreme disappointment. Reddit user melodiehnoon was similarly fooled over five years ago, writing: "Bought a lawn mower thinking I could pick all the weeds quick and easy.... waited an entire day to get it in the mail and turns out it is literally just for decoration!"

Our Take: More Animal Crossing Decor Should Be Made Functional

What Even Is The Point Of A Lawnmower That Doesn't Mow Lawns?

Although most non-tool items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons aren't functional, it hasn't stopped players from wishing that Nintendo had added just a few more fun extras to its furniture and decor. Some items can be interacted with in small but cute ways, like turning lamps on or off, spinning the globe, playing certain instruments, and so on. Even the lawnmower, while not actually functional, makes a lawnmower sound when it's moved.

But there are definitely some decorative items that seem like they should function as advertised. The lawnmower, for instance, should be able to actually mow lawns, the toolbox should hold tools, and the umbrella stand should be able to display the player's umbrellas. Other fun decor items like pools and carnival rides can't be used, either, and the community was thrilled to discover that there's a glitch allowing players to use the hot tub in the game.

Maybe the next title to follow after Animal Crossing: New Horizons will have more opportunities to interact with decorations and furniture. At the very least, players can hope that Nintendo adds a way to easily and quickly remove weeds and flowers from the island, instead of picking them one by one.
