It's Officially the End of an Era for John Wick on Streaming

The success of the John Wick franchise can be summed up by two components. Keanu Reeves and minimal dialogue. Never has a series of action films demonstrated so well why cinema is a visual medium. The first movie, premiering in 2014, was built off a simple idea. After mourning a loss, former hitman John Wick gets a puppy to cope, only for the worst thing imaginable to happen. The assassin spends the following hour and a half wreaking bloody vengeance for his fallen pet.

John Wick is both extremely relatable in the first venture and a genuine joy to watch. Reeves teamed up with his The Matrix stunt double, Chad Stahelski, to bring this gun-fu visual masterpiece to life, and it created one of the most successful action franchises in recent memory. Sadly, the series of movies just got a little less accessible as HBO officially signals the end of an era. The John Wick franchise is officially leaving the streaming platform on July 31, leaving a large void in its wake. The Ana de Armas spin-off, Ballerina, is still on the table, but the departure of the John Wick films from the platform represents the mystery of the franchise’s future.

John Wick’s Future is Up in the Air

John Wick has been one of the strongest franchises of the past decade, not dependent on any IP, but just the strength of Keanu Reeves’ physical prowess. The series is unique, weaving a fascinating world about an underworld of assassins and the code that they live by. Populated with esteemed actors like Ian McShane, Lane Reddick, and Donnie Yen, John Wick was practically created to go on forever.

Just as John Wick will disappear from HBO, however, the title character seems to have disappeared from the franchise. Following John Wick 4, the future of the character was left ambiguous. After John faces off against another power-hungry maniac angling for the High Table, he appears to die from his injuries.

The story concludes with a shot of John's grave, and yet, there is no clear consensus that this is the last fans will see of him. His death seems up in the air at the end of the narrative as the story appears to pivot to Caine’s (Yen) story. Yen will lead his own spin-off about Caine, which may satisfy the masses for now. Still, fans want to know if they will ever see Reeves in the role of John Wick again.

The actor has reached iconic levels of fame at this point, portraying fascinating characters in film and even in video games. The true death of John Wick would be heartbreaking, and Chad Stahelski has hinted that this may not be the end of the road for the character. To be sure, there is more blood to get from this stone thanks to the immersive world and in-depth mythology. John Wick is one of the most compelling franchises out there, and it accomplishes this with a protagonist who says very little. That is the measure of an iconic character, and those can never really die.

While viewers wait for news on the life or death of John Wick, they can catch all four movies of the franchise until July 31. After that, his cameo in Ballerina will have to do.
