Marshals Season 2’s “Massive” Set Pieces & Character Changes Teased By Returning Star

Marshals season 2 is going to be bigger than ever.

Series star Logan Marshall-Green has teased "massive" set pieces and character changes ahead of the Yellowstone spinoff's approaching return. Marshals season 1 saw Kayce Dutton join a group of US Marshals who set out to protect Montana, dealing with a whole host of violent criminals and organizations in the process. This involved introducing numerous new characters, including Marshall-Green's Pete "Cal" Calvin, Kayce's team leader who moved to Montana to be closer to his daughter. As the series progressed, he went through many changes himself, including a surprise cancer diagnosis late into the season.

Speaking with Perri Nemiroff on Collider Ladies Night, Marshall-Green explained how Cal's character changes are going to be extremely important to Marshals season 2, while also teasing what to expect from the large-scale set pieces the show is most known for. The actor began by recapping Cal's pancoast tumor, explaining the character's experience pulled from that of a creator on the show. He also teased a number of major set pieces that will include plenty of action, but emphasized how character-building would be a core part of the show's focus for season 2:

What you learn about Cal in season 1 is absolutely going to come into effect, which is his cancer diagnosis. It's based on a creator's real story, one of the creators real stories. So we're going to go after it and we're still in the middle of it. And I couldn't tell you, to be completely honest. Those kinds of things I don't want to know. Just want to live it human. It's the best part about TV. It's the closest out of all the mediums to life, which is you don't know what you're getting handed next. But it's a lot more of the same when it comes to the massive amounts of set pieces, action balanced with character. A lot of character.

When asked about his relationship with other characters in season 2, Marshall-Green explained that Cal would be wrestling with himself more than any other character in the show. He explained how, despite the harshness that he's expressed in his personality, Marshals season 2 will deal with more humanization and "softening those edges," making him understand that he's just one part of his larger team. This seems like it'll transpire though a mixture of dealing with his cancer diagnosis, alongside the new threats the team will need to face:

I mean, to be completely honest, the one relationship that I'm really looking forward to is him with himself. He has a lot of pride built in. He's a soldier. I'm looking forward to him being kind of humbled by his experience. He can crack whips and be very demanding of his team, and somewhat hard around the edges. But I'm looking forward to softening those edges with him, and like him realizing he's not mortal. He's not that soldier any longer. And so I think if anything, and I know that it sounds like just hoo-ha-ey and esoteric, but it is true. That's the other thing that TV really affords is not just an evolution of character given their relationships with the rest of the ensemble, but also with themselves. And I'm really looking forward to that.

Cal is rough around the edges, but he always has his team's interests at heart. While other characters in Marshals have important connections to him, even if somewhat abrasive, he's always been at the center of the action. His cancer diagnosis and the subsequent events he's experienced in season 1 seem like they'll serve as the basis for growth and change. Marshall-Green teases a softer side to the hardened soldier, which could redefine his character despite how militant and headstrong he's shown himself to be thus far.

Marshals season 2 is set to premiere October 4, 2026 on CBS, and streaming the next day on Paramount+. Season 2 is expected to have a larger episode count as well, meaning there will be even more time for the show to explore Cal's characterization amid the new threats the team faces. For now, there's no indication as to what this means for him and what he'll be doing moving forward, especially when it comes to the connections he has. But season 2 sounds like it'll be mostly introspective as he evolves.

Marshals continues the ever-expanding world of Yellowstone following the end of the original series. Its return will be followed by Dutton Ranch season 2 on Paramount+, alongside spinoffs 1944 and 6666, which are currently in development. As for the CBS show, it seems poised to procure some deep character moments amid the action of its follow-up batch of episodes.
