It's Been 9 Years Since This SNL Comedy Veterans' Last Movie Collaboration And A New Film Is Long Overdue

1 week ago 8

Considering that it's been nine years since Saturday Night Live superstars Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made Sisters, another team-up seems well overdue. The Saturday Night Live female cast members expertly demonstrate their flair for comedy in Sisters. This collaboration came after their first project, Baby Mama, and sits at a rather average 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, these comedies aren't groundbreaking cinema, but they're lighthearted entertainment nonetheless, straight from two fan-favorite members of the Saturday Night Live cast.

Their lifelong friendship has seen them work together in numerous ways outside Saturday Night Live, from hosting the Golden Globes in 2021 to having brief roles in 2024's Mean Girls. Remarkably, the Golden Globe Awards is where Poehler and Fey's friendship began. Fey notes that she found her distinctive flow with Poehler during the three years hosting the ceremony (via Today). Since then, the pair regularly watch Saturday Night Live with each other, even when they are not physically together. It's always a joy seeing the two acting off each other, and with any luck, the Restless Leg tour will spark some new ideas from the creatives for a new movie.

Amy Poehler And Tina Fey's Last Movie Was The Duo At Their Best

Poehler And Fey Benefit From Their Time On Saturday Night Live

Sisters reverses the roles of Poehler and Fey's previous characters in Baby Mama, and instead has Poehler play the uptight sister, while Fey is the irresponsible party goer, causing chaos wherever she goes. These roles far better suit the persona of each actress, as evidenced by their respective roles in Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock — where Leslie Knope is stronger in her convictions and Liz Lemon has a more exaggerated comical performance. The Sisters' characters Maura (Poehler) and Kate Ellis (Fey) are all the stronger for Poehler and Fey's years of expertise in amplified comedic performances.

Netflix releases a trailer for Wine Country. The film marks the directorial debut for Amy Poehler, and reunites her with Saturday Night Live alums.

It's clear that Sisters capitalizes on the duo's experience in live TV comedy. Although Saturday Night Live has had many excellent skits throughout the years, it's generally agreed the show saw its heights during the early 2000s. Their experience on Saturday Night Live ensured Poehler and Fey had a better understanding of what audiences desired from live comedy, which translated rather well to their projects for the big screen. Sisters is representative of the duo's expertise at comedic timing, and makes for a delightful viewing experience.

Amy Poehler And Tina Fey's Projects Often Feel Like Saturday Night Live Reunions

Sisters features guest stars from Poehler and Fey's era on Saturday Night Live, including comedy actors, Maya Rudolph and Bobby Moynihan. Rudolph plays Brinda, the jealous and obnoxious arch nemesis of Kate. Rudolph confessed that the offer was sent to her in a text message from Fey (via Today) where she "knew [Poehler and Fey] were up to no good." The actress is quite correctly described as a "scene stealer" and is a wonderful addition to the Sisters' ensemble cast. Both Rudolph and Moynihan fit the tone of the movie remarkably well.

The iconic comedy group consists of Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch, and sometimes a number of other Hollywood comics.

It's fun to see the Saturday Night Live cast having fun doing this project together, and the Sisters viewing experience is more rewarding with the knowledge that the comedians frequently meet up outside their professional lives, too. The group can frequently be seen together in videos on Amy Poehler's official TikTok account, where she often shares their antics. Their consistent collaboration on Hollywood projects highlights their strong bond and greatly underscores their comedic likeness — which is what gives their projects that unique flair for success.

How Likely Is A New Movie Starring Poehler And Fey?

Collaboration On A New Movie Should Not Be Completely Ruled Out

The 'Restless Leg' tour has proven incredibly successful, and Fey announced new dates were to be added after the first set of venues sold out in record time during the Spring. Their 2024 stand-up tour highlights Poehler and Fey's desire to remain working together, and more importantly indicates that the pair are not struggling for ideas with new creative endeavors. The announcement that the tour will extend it's run with nine new stops means Poehler and Fey's first live-comedy performance will continue until mid-December 2024. It's entirely plausible that these four months on the road could have sparked some fresh ideas for a new motion picture.

A reunion between Poehler and Fey, as well as the encompassing Saturday Night Live cast, would not be surprising considering the group's efforts to keep in contact.

In her interview with Today, Fey refers to her screen and stage partner as her "work wife," before lovingly claiming that "we really just have such an ease and shorthand working with each other." A reunion between Poehler and Fey, as well as the encompassing Saturday Night Live cast, would not be surprising considering the group's efforts to keep in contact. Their previous work is proof enough that a third movie may be in the works, as Baby Mama did not generate large commercial success, but led to the creation of Sisters regardless, seven years later.
