Is Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 The End?

The highly anticipated second part of Yellowstone season 5 arrives in November 2024, and it might be the last time fans see the Dutton family on their screens. Paramount Network's neo-Western drama series premiered in June 2018 and has been a hit among critics and fans alike since season 2. Yellowstone follows the aforementioned Dutton clan, led by Kevin Costner's John Dutton III. Together, they look after the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, which has been in their family for generations. Through it all, the characters experience many ups and downs as they try to maintain their control and power in Montana.

The Yellowstone season 5, part 1 finale ended with some Dutton family members in trouble. However, the most pressing concern was Jamie filing articles of impeachment against John (the Governor of Montana) and committing to getting rid of his father and sister, Beth, once and for all. Meanwhile, Beth, who has always hated her brother, is more determined than ever to kill Jamie. The war between Beth and Jamie is in full motion heading into Yellowstone season 5, part 2, and with Costner absent, many are wondering how the season will end and if it'll truly be the show's end.

Paramount Announced Season 5 Was The End After Kevin Costner's Exit

Following Paramount's announcement that Kevin Costner would be leaving Yellowstone ahead of the season 5, part 2 premiere, many interpreted the news as also meaning the TV series was coming to an end. Unfortunately, they were right. Only a few days after the network revealed John Dutton III wouldn't appear in season 5, part 2, Paramount also disclosed that there wouldn't be a sixth season. As of the writing of this article, Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will be the neo-Western drama's last outing. However, there is still a chance that season 6 will happen.

The next TV series in Taylor Sheridan’s lineup is being called the next Yellowstone, but it’s quite different from the neo-Western drama.

In the months leading up to the release of Yellowstone season 5, part 2, reports claimed that Paramount was developing a spinoff series starring Kelly Reilly as Beth, Cole Hauser as Rip, and Luke Grimes as Kayce. The network never confirmed these reports. However, all signs pointed towards Reilly, Hauser, and Grimes reprising their Yellowstone roles in some sort of project following the season 5, part 2 finale.

Then, rumors indicated that Paramount would scrap the spinoff and just renew Yellowstone for a sixth season (starring Reilly, Hauser, and Grimes, of course). But like the reported spinoff series, Paramount hasn't validated these claims. Only time will tell if the Dutton family's legacy will live on once Yellowstone season 5, part 2 concludes.

Yellowstone Season 5, Part 1 Had 8 Episodes

Since season 5 will have 14 episodes total once it ends and part 1 contains eight, Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will only have six episodes. The premiere of season 5, part 2 (aka season 5, episode 9) will debut on Sunday, November 10, at 8 pm ET on Paramount Network. The rest of the episodes are expected to air consecutively in the following weeks, meaning the finale will arrive in December 2024. However, Paramount has not unveiled an official release schedule for Yellowstone season 5, part 2.

Even if Yellowstone season 6 doesn't happen after Kevin Costner's exit, creator/showrunner Taylor Sheridan has many other TV shows and spinoffs in the Yellowstone universe in the works. For starters, filming of the highly anticipated second season of the Yellowstone prequel 1923 is underway and the premiere is scheduled for 2025. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren reprise their roles as Jacob and Cara Dutton (the great-great-grand-uncle and great-great-grand-aunt of Costner's John Dutton III) in 1923 season 2, while Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter and New Amsterdam's Janet Montgomery join the cast as Mamie Fossett and Hillary, respectively.

Sheridan also has three new Yellowstone spinoffs in the works, including The Madison, 6666, and 1944. The status of 6666 (which would revolve around the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas in the present day) and 1944 (which would serve as another prequel about the Dutton family in 1944) are unknown as of the writing of this article. It's unclear what stage of development they are in or when they are set to release.

However, filming for The Madison starring Michelle Pfeiffer began in August 2024 and is scheduled to premiere in 2025. The Madison follows Pfieffer's Stacy Clyburn, a wealthy matriarch who moves her family from New York City to the Madison River valley of central Montana after the deaths of her husband and brother-in-law. Other cast members of the Yellowstone spinoff The Madison include Patrick J. Adams, Beau Garrett, Elle Chapman, and Matthew Fox.

Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner and centers on his character John Dutton. Dutton and his family live on a cattle ranch just a few hours away from Yellowstone National Park. The series chronicles the family’s struggle to defend their home from an Indian reservation and land developers. As if their life wasn’t complicated enough, the Duttons also have medical issues, political aspirations, and family secrets stacked against them.
