One of the biggest decisions in Stardew Valley is whether to get married and which spouse a player wants to pursue. Since most of the charming farming simulator is about building relationships with the residents of Pelican Valley, it makes sense for the farmer to settle down. It takes so much time and many gifts to court the love of your farmer’s life, so it makes sense to carefully consider who to pursue.

There are twelve romance options, and one special roommate, available in Stardew Valley to bring to live on the farm with the player. Marriage brings lots of benefits, like free gifts and chores, but also takes a lot of effort, which begs the question of if marriage is worth it. However, for the full Stardew Valley experience, marriage is necessary.

What Happens When You Get Married In Stardew Valley

A New Roommate With Gifts, Chores, And Kisses

Getting married in Stardew Valley is a long process. Players must complete a long series of steps to romance their favorite romance NPC, which includes earning eight hearts of friendship, giving them a bouquet to unlock two more hearts, upgrading the farmhouse, unlocking the tide pool section of the beach, and gifting the NPC a mermaid’s pendant. The pendant itself costs 5,000 gold and can only be purchased on the beach during rainy days. While some mods can make this process easier, gaining friendship hearts can take a very long time.

Needless to say, marriage is a lot of work. Depending on the NPC a player chooses to romance, marriage can also be costly since some NPCs have more expensive tastes for loved gifts than others. Once the wedding is over, the new spouse will move into the farmhouse and will now have an additional four hearts to earn.

If the spouse is kept happy, by talking to them or continuing to give gifts, they’ll help around the farm. The helpfulness of a spouse on the farm is debatable, since they’ll often water all the crops on the farm full of sprinklers or feed all the animals in barns with auto-feeders. Spouses will also water the pet’s bowl and give gifts, which is also nice to receive.

Is It Worth Raising Children In Stardew Valley?

Forever Toddlers Living On The Farm

While spouses can be incredibly useful around the farm depending on what they choose to do every day, the potential children that farmers can have are less functional. While it’s not necessary to have children perform some chore on the farm for the player's benefit, it would be nice if they did anything besides running around. In fact, having them grow beyond the toddler stage would also be nice. All in all, it doesn’t seem to be worth it to have children in Stardew Valley unless players are seeking a completionist run.

Who You Should Marry In Stardew Valley

The Spouse With The Best Room, Gifts, And Hobby

Which NPC a player marries is mostly down to personal preference, but what benefits each spouse gives could have an impact on that decision. Once players get married, their spouse will move in and create their own bedroom in the farmhouse. They’ll also take up a spot near the entrance of the farm for their daily hobby, which is downright adorable.

One major downside of a spouse in the farmhouse is that they can add or change any furniture at a whim, which can lead to some ugly interior design. Every romance NPC has their own cute hobby, but some look much cooler than others. Abigail has a very well rounded room that features a CRT TV with a gaming console, a drum set, a hamster cage, and a sword. Alongside her outdoor hobby of playing the flute, Abigail has the best presence on the farm.

Sam also has a fairly well rounded room with a few instruments, a bookcase, and a PC, alongside a half-pipe outside for skateboarding, which makes Sam a very fun NPC to have on the farm. Sebastian, another spouse with a nice room, spends his time working on his motorcycle outside.

The worst bedroom out of all the spouses is Shane’s, since it’s a messy room with spilled beer and disused weights. The context of Shane’s heart events make this room even worse, since he had promised to give up alcohol and become a better person. This gross room is offset by his chicken hutch outside, which represents one of his most endearing traits.

For late game activities like getting to the bottom of the Skull Cavern, both Abigail and Maru give bombs which ranks them higher in usefulness.

One less known “spouse” is Krobus. The friendly sewer monster can come live on a player’s farm with his own room if he accepts a void ghost pendant from the player. His room looks a lot like his area in the Sewers, and he’ll only venture outside on rainy days which means he won’t use the outdoor area like other spouses. While Krobus is fun to have around, especially because of his unique gifts, he won’t help around the farm like other spouses, which makes him less useful in a utilitarian sense.

Every Stardew Valley spouse gives special gifts, but those gifts are all well-balanced enough to not make a huge difference. However, for late game activities like getting to the bottom of the Skull Cavern, both Abigail and Maru give bombs which ranks them higher in usefulness. Maru also gives a Warp Totem for the Farm, which is very handy. When comparing gifts, it seems that Abigail, Maru, and Harvey give the best by a small margin.
