Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Invincible season 4 finale. One week after the season 4 finale was released, the Invincible season 5 release window and return of two important villains has been confirmed.

After an explosive penultimate episode in which the planet Viltrum was destroyed, Invincible season 4 ended on a quieter and more haunting note. Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun) returns to Earth and struggles with his trauma and fear of what will happen when Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace) and the surviving Viltrumites reemerge. The season concludes with Thragg revealing that the Viltrumites are already on Earth, where they will rebuild and repopulate, and he threatens the annihilation of billions if Mark or anyone else gets in their way.

Following this dramatic cliffhanger, the official Invincible social media accounts have now confirmed that season 5's release "should be sometime in 2027." It's reiterated that season 5's voice acting is complete, which was shared last year when the renewal was announced. As for story details, it's confirmed that Thragg and Dinosaurus (Matthew Rhys) will be back, but Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will not return. Check out the post below:

Invincible season 5 announcement

A 2027 release window is not too surprising, given last year's season 5 announcement, as the series has been releasing new episodes annually since 2023. This also delivers on Robert Kirkman's assurances of trying to debut a new season every year and avoid repeating the nearly three-year hiatus between seasons 1 and 2. Since season 2, part 2, season 3, and season 4 all premiered in either February or March of their respective release years, there is a good chance of season 5 coming out in early 2027 as well.

In terms of the villains, Pace previously confirmed Thragg's Invincible season 5 return while speaking with ScreenRant. Season 4 already made it clear that unlike in season 3, Mark killed Conquest for good this time, which has now been further solidified. Dinosaurus' return may come as more of a surprise to some viewers since he has only appeared in one episode so far, although readers of Kirkman's Invincible comics know that the character plays an important role in the upcoming story.

With these season 5 details cemented, the question now becomes whether it will be renewed for more seasons. Kirkman has previously spoken about there needing to be between seven and nine seasons to adapt the source material. Given how long it takes to make a season of the animated series and in order for it to continue returning on an annual basis, it would be beneficial for a season 6 renewal to be announced sooner rather than later.

Unlike many other shows that lose steam over time, Invincible's reviews have remained consistently stellar. The series has an overall score of 99% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with 98% for season 1 and 100% for seasons 2, 3, and 4. The audience reception has also been incredibly positive given the overall 90% score. A modern show getting to five seasons is becoming increasingly rare, but Invincible is poised to go far beyond that if there end up being as many seasons as Kirkman anticipates.

All Invincible seasons 1-4 episodes are streaming on Prime Video.
