Nicolas Ayala is a Senior Writer for the Comics team at ScreenRant, with over five years of experience writing about Superhero media, action movies, and TV shows.

More than two decades after its creation, the Invincible universe continues to expand with the introduction of new characters in new media. What began as a superhero deconstruction has evolved into a layered mythology encompassing alien empires and generational legacies. All throughout, Invincible has retained its visceral intensity while opening space for new characters and conflicts.

The Invincible universe's next major extension is Invincible VS, a competitive fighting game set directly within the franchise’s continuity. Scheduled for release on April 30, 2026, Invincible VS is launching across major platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It brings together heroes and villains from across the saga and translates the show’s brutal combat style into mechanically distinct playable movesets.

Besides taking their favorite fights to life, Invincible fans will get to meet new faces when Invincible VS releases this April.

Invincible VS' Ella Mental Officially Gets Her Own Canon Origin Story

Capes #7; Written by Robert Kirkman & Benito Cereno; Art by Cory Walker & Mark Englert

Following her debut in the Invincible VS video game, the element-manipulating superhero Ella Mental will receive her own detailed origin story in Capes #7, scheduled for May 27, 2026. Skybound will serialize her story as a recurring backup feature through issues #7-12, strategically aligning the character’s print debut with the broader franchise’s multimedia rollout. The first glimpse at Ella Mental shows her wearing her white-and-green costume and transforming parts of her body into rock and fire.

Skybound is currently republishing the original six-issue run of Robert Kirkman and Mark Englert's Capes in a remastered format. Alongside this relaunch, Kirkman and Cory Walker’s Ella Mental arc will supplement Capes' ongoing world-building. Meanwhile, Invincible season 4 is set to return on Prime Video on March 18, while the comic spinoff Invincible Presents: Battle Beast resumes in March. With Invincible VS launching April 30, Ella Mental’s cross-platform introduction reflects an expansion strategy that's rarely as coordinated in other multimedia franchises.

The Viltrumites have been established as Invincible's most dangerous species, but some of them have proven to be much stronger than their peers.

Ella Mental’s elemental manipulation immediately helps her stand apart. Control over air, fire, earth, and water introduces an almost mythic power set into a universe typically grounded in pseudo-scientific or alien abilities. Ella Mental could perform large-scale environmental manipulation, defensive fortification, ranged offense, and mobility augmentation. Whether she ultimately ranks among the universe’s most powerful figures will depend on defined limitations, but conceptually, Ella Mental's toolkit makes her one of the most adaptable Invincible characters introduced in years.

Invincible VS Will Be A Key Part Of The Franchise

Invincible Is Creating A True Multimedia Franchise

The upcoming Invincible VS is shaping up as a venue for substantial world-building and a meaningful extension of the Invincible canon. The introduction of characters like Ella Mental directly in the game, with their backstory unfolding concurrently in print, motivates fans to explore every related medium. In practical terms, Invincible VS and Capes become a narrative gateway to other titles. Fans are encouraged to follow every title, yet missing one doesn't bar them from enjoying the rest.

This is organic multimedia growth. Each format adds something new and unique, but none becomes mandatory homework. This strategy fosters goodwill and long-term engagement because it respects audience autonomy. Other long-running properties have struggled to achieve this balance. Dragon Ball, for example, has introduced characters and transformations that were later sidelined or rendered non-canonical. While that approach can generate short-term hype, it permanently fragments the franchise.
