Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has made it clear that he absolutely cannot stand a specific Spider-Man sequel.
The Spider-Man films, primarily managed by Sony Pictures and recently the MCU, include three live-action versions of Peter Parker. These iterations are portrayed by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. There are also several critically acclaimed animated films, such as the Spider-Verse movies, that feature Miles Morales. With global box office earnings exceeding $11 billion, the franchise is one of the most successful in history, currently standing as the second highest-grossing movie series.
During an episode of The Escape Pod, Kirkman did not hold back. The creator revealed that Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was by far his least favorite of all the films in the massive franchise. He even went as far as to call the sequel "dog s***." This remark was somewhat surprising. Not because the movie was good, but because Kirkman isn't known for being harsh and generally keeps any negative comments he may have to himself.
However, he made an exception for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While he praised certain elements of the sequel, such as Garfield's portrayal of the iconic superhero and Jamie Foxx's performance in the movie, he explained how he believed the film as a whole was very flawed. He explained how it failed to tell a cohesive story, so from a narrative standpoint, it didn't work.
No, terrible, terrible. I don’t like to publicly talk about my opinions on movies. Still, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is dogs***. As much as I love Jamie Foxx, I love Andrew, Andrew Garfield is a great Spider-Man. There are aspects to both of those movies that are spectacular, but that movie is a mess.
In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the titular hero struggles to juggle his superhero responsibilities and relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Peter also uncovers several details about his parents' deaths, and it all links back to Oscorp. The sequel brings the villain Electro (Foxx) to the big screen and shows Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) becoming the Green Goblin. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also depicts the infamous death of Gwen.
Kirkman is very well-known and critically acclaimed in the comic book world. Aside from creating Invincible, the writer has been the genius behind several other major franchises, such as The Walking Dead. And the author has even written a crossover comic, Marvel Team-Up #14, which features Invincible and Spider-Man. In the story, Mark Grayson accidentally enters the Marvel Universe. While there, he helps Peter Parker fight Doc Ock before returning to his own dimension.
Originally created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Spider-Man has become one of Marvel's most popular characters. The wall-crawler made his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15 during the Silver Age of comics. After a major surge in popularity, the character got his own solo series in March 1963, The Amazing Spider-Man.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 can be streamed on Disney+.
