The next chapter of Insidious has just revealed its first look.

Now, Sony Pictures Entertainment have released a full trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further, debuting the first look at the sixth movie at CinemaCon. The trailer features a dentist named Gemma who, while tending to a patient, becomes knocked backward into the Further. She continues to have these experiences of being in the astral plane before going to a friend for help.

Elise Rainier possesses her friend to make contact, revealing Gemma has the ability to freely travel between our world and the Further. However, the Further is starting to bleed into reality, with Gemma able to bring demons back to our reality, in Elise's words, "permanently." What follows is a series of scares as the protagonist's life and family falls into demonic chaos.

Check out the full trailer below:

The idea of the Further bleeding into the real world was partially hinted at during Insidious: The Red Door's post-credits scene. In the scene, the light over the door to the astral dimension came back on, implying that another connection between it and the living world had opened up. This connection, it seems, is the franchise's all-new protagonist.

During CinemaCon, Adam Bergman of Sony Pictures Entertainment called Insidious: Out of the Further "the most terrifying film in the franchise," a major feat considering the number of scares found in previous installments. The movie's centrality around a woman trying to protect her family aids in the high-octane fears, which are bound to be even stronger in the full-length film.

This will be the first of the Insidious movies to feature a central character who was not introduced in the original film. Previous installments have directly focused on either the Lambert family or Elise. While the latter is set to return here, it's Gemma that will be fighting for her life and the lives of her family as she tries to close the gap between the Further and the living world.

Alongside Lin Shaye's return as Elise, the cast of Insidious: Out of the Further consists of Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Island Austin, and Laura Gordon. The movie will see the core human cast tormented by demons trying to tear an even bigger hole between the worlds, something that could lead to devastation due to Gemma's powers.

With Jacob Chase (Come Play) serving as both director and screenwriter, there's a central vision at play for the movie. It's also just one of multiple films in the franchise currently in the works: the upcoming Thread: An Insidious Tale will be a spinoff written and directed by Jeremy Slater. However, said offshoot doesn't have a release date as of writing.

Since Insidious: Out of the Further is still a few months away, there's no telling just how many more terrors await Gemma and her family. With the series now reaching a point where it's introducing a whole new protagonist, it seems like the franchise is about to enter a new, unexplored age full of threats never before seen in the films.
