It's safe to say that Baldur's Gate 3 has set the bar extremely high when it comes to Baldur's Gate games, with its iconic world-building and beloved characters capturing the hearts of players worldwide and inspiring one of the most dedicated fandoms out there. With Larian Studios officially moving on from the series after BG3's success, however, fans are uncertain about the franchise's future.

And as if Baldur's Gate 4 moving to a new studio didn't make fans nervous enough, HBO recently announced an official Baldur's Gate 3 television series in the works that will apparently serve as a sequel, following the events of the ending of the game. While some fans are happy to see their favorite characters return in live-action, the prospect of a television adaptation has met a great deal of pushback, with players deeply concerned about exactly what story they plan to tell (via Reddit).

Baldur's Gate 3 Is Getting A Sequel

While it may not be the sequel that most fans were hoping for in the form of an official Baldur's Gate 4 announcement, HBO's television series adaptation for a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel (aka "continuation") was officially revealed back in February this year. It's being spearheaded by Craig Mazin, co-creator of HBO's The Last of Us, and the mind behind the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries Chernobyl.

But the gripe about HBO's BG3 adaptation isn't with Mazin, rather the scope of the show's story and the decision to pick up immediately after the events of the game. "The things I'm worried about are what personal ending choices Mazin will make 'canon,'" user Achaewa says, highlighting a major sticking point among die-hard BG3 enthusiasts.

The nature of Baldur's Gate 3's storytelling leaves much of what happens at the end of the game up to every individual player. The show-runners will have to make some tough decisions about each of the main characters' fates and how they're portrayed on screen, not to mention a major decision about which of the several endings from the game will be the jumping off point for the new story.

Fans such as Ninthshadow are deeply skeptical of how the story could possibly do the game justice: "It's a masterfully crafted game with multiple endings, arcs and beloved characters, easy to 'ruin'. Like all potentially bad sequels, it's trying to continue a story which is finished."

Don't Expect Baldur's Gate 4 Anytime Soon

Ultimately, whether you're waiting for the Baldur's Gate 3 HBO sequel series or the actual video game sequel with Baldur's Gate 4, it's going to be a pretty long wait. With the HBO series only being in early development as of 2026 and director Mazin still reportedly working on production for The Last of Us Season 3, we're looking at a 2028 release at the very earliest by most estimates.

But that's nothing compared to what fans are looking at with Baldur's Gate 4, which at the moment hasn't even been confirmed to be in development, with the only real confirmation coming from a Wizards of the Coast exec who said that a sequel "is a given." Outside the fact that Larian will definitively NOT be working on the project, there's only speculation as to what shape the game will take and who will develop it.

That leaves the HBO Baldur's Gate 3 series as the next major release in the franchise, and one that will have to tide fans over for the foreseeable future. As such, it's no wonder fans are concerned about the official HBO sequel and are keeping their fingers tightly crossed that it isn't a complete disaster.
