Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour.
The trailer was just released for Andrew Stanton's upcoming live-action movie In the Blink of an Eye. The filmmaker is best known for his work on several Pixar films, including directing Finding Nemo, WALL-E and Finding Dory, and writing the scripts for Toy Story, A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc.
In 2012, he directed the live-action sci-fi film John Carter, which bombed at the box office after grossing almost $300 million against an initial budget of around $260 million.
Now, 14 years later, Stanton is back with a new live-action sci-fi film. In the Blink of an Eye will be released on Hulu on February 27. The streamer just released the trailer, which teases three storylines that unfold across thousands of years, including during the Middle Paleolithic period when Neanderthals were alive.
One of the main characters in the movie is Claire, played by Rashida Jones. She's an anthropologist in the present-day storyline and says, "Life seems so improbable, and then it all makes sense looking back." She's devoted to her work because she gets to research where humanity comes from.
The trailer also introduces Kate McKinnon's character, Coakley, who lives in the future and is seeking a new path forward for civilization. "Our whole home was dying, and now we're making a new home," she says, in a storyline that's reminiscent of Stanton's WALL-E.

Along with Jones and McKinnon, In the Blink of an Eye also stars Daveed Diggs, Tanaya Beatty, Jorge Vargas, Skywalker Hughes, Tatyana Rose Baptiste and Yeji Kim. Colby Day wrote the script for the Stanton-directed film, with Jared Ian Goldman serving as producer.
In the Blink of an Eye is still more than three weeks away from being released on Hulu, but early reviews are overwhelmingly negative so far. Critics say the film is disappointing, and the overarching theme of celebrating humanity is lost in a story that feels too ambitious. Its Rotten Tomatoes score is currently sitting at 18%.
By comparison, Stanton's previous live-action film, John Carter, has a 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
It's not all bad news for Stanton, though. At the Sundance Film Festival, In the Blink of an Eye received the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, which honors science-based films. Previous films that have won this prize include Sally, The Pod Generation, Tesla and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
Despite exploring a live-action story again, Stanton isn't leaving the world of Pixar behind. He served as an advisor on the upcoming animated film Hoppers, which arrives in theaters on March 6, one week after In the Blink of an Eye is released on Hulu.
Then Toy Story 5, directed by Stanton, will be released in June. While the filmmaker has had multiple creative roles on the previous Toy Story movies, this is the first time he's directing one of the films in the series. Stanton co-wrote Toy Story 4 with Stephany Folsom, and now has sole screenwriting credit for the upcoming fifth installment.
In the Blink of an Eye will be released Friday, February 27 on Hulu.
