Reuniting with famed Jon Snow actor Kit Harington, Dinklage commented in a conversation published by Variety on how impractical the costumes were at times: "It's a heavy cloak. There's nothing worse than an actor complaining, but Spain was very hot, and I often would raise my hand going, 'If Tyrion's so smart, why is he wearing these clothing in this 100 degree weather'?"
Harington reminded Dinklage of the "cold vests" that the cast had access to, with "the tubes that ran through" and "an ice thing you'd plug in," which Dinklage had initially rejected. "I was like, 'No, thank you,' for a week," said Dinklage. "I was like, 'I'm going to suffer.” And then at the end I was like, 'No way,' because everybody else was nodding off because they felt so comfortable."
Dinklage and Harington reminisced about filming Game of Thrones, as well as talking about what they did immediately after filming wrapped on season 8, their kids watching the show now or in the future, and what their new projects have been like. Harington was launched into the spotlight again by his role in HBO's Industry; he also stars in How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Eternals.
Since Game of Thrones' ending, Dinklage has joined another major franchise with his part in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, lent his voice to the global phenomenon of Wicked as Dr. Dillamond, and appeared in Roofman and The Lowdown. He is also set to star in Olivia Coleman's upcoming fantasy comedy Wicker and the confirmed Alien: Earth season 2.
Dinklage revealed that Alien: Earth is beloved by his son. "That's one of the reasons I said yes," said the actor. "Like, "I'm going to be such a hero in his eyes." I told him and he was like, "What? Don't f--k up my favorite show, Dad." Because it's going to take him out of it. I didn't think about that. I'm going to be a bit of reality in his escape." Dinklage also expressed his disappointment with the roles he has been offered in the fantasy genre since 2019.
"I think Tyrion, for someone my size, opened people's eyes. In that fantasy genre, most often, those characters are not really fully realized human beings. But once Thrones ended, I was still getting fantasy things that were back to what it was before." The cast of Game of Thrones certainly realized at the time that what they were doing would be monumental in the history of television, though the show's legacy has been a mixed bag.
The Game of Thrones universe continues to expand through generally successful spinoffs, with House of the Dragon season 3 premiering this month and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 on the horizon. But the dedication of the original cast and crew laid the groundwork for these projects, both physically, as they endure extreme temperatures, and emotionally.
"I spent a lot of Game of Thrones working from a place of pain," Harington also said. "It was the character as well, I think." But he also told his former co-star: "But Tyrion brought so much humor and pain to the thing."
All episodes of Game of Thrones are available to stream on HBO Max.
