If you're looking for an adorable and heartwarming adventure to add to your wishlist for 2026, look no further than Capy Castaway. The game is expected to release later this year, with a demo being made available as part of Steam's Summer Next Fest later this month. Happily, ScreenRant was able to experience the short demo early to give you a heads-up on what you can expect from it.
Made by the same team behind the 2023 wholesome sensation, Pekoe, this one takes a very different approach to gameplay while still keeping with a similarly endearing feeling. Capy Castaway originally caught my attention due to how adorable it looks with its vibrant artwork featuring a young capybara pup and a clever little crow. Although there is no precise release date available yet for the full game, it is expected to launch sometime in 2026.
Capy Castaway's Story
The free demo on Steam doesn't give a lot of the story yet for Capy Castaway, but you do get enough to understand that Capy and other animals have been washed ashore in this world after a massive flood has wreaked havoc. In this demo, you can swim around and climb on top of houses and buildings that have been washed to sea, and talk to some of the now-homeless critters.
After surviving the flood, Capy was found by the talkative little crow, Corvi, who takes Capy under their wing (pun intended) to help them explore the area, solve puzzles, help other NPCs, and, presumably, figure out a new living situation for Capy. The game is a narrative-driven adventure that features a world inspired by the city and childhood stories of Toronto, where the developers have lived.
Gameplay Is Charming, Although Handling Both Characters Can Be Confusing
While exploring this new world, players control both Capy and Corvi, with some buttons designed to either tell Capy to smell and dig things up, as well as run around, of course, and others designed to tell Corvi to fly up high to fetch things that are otherwise out of reach, or even carry Capy across rivers or other obstacles.
It can get a bit confusing switching between guiding the two of them, although I caught on fairly quickly. Unfortunately, telling Corvi to fetch things might need a little work still, as getting Corvi to retrieve some fruit from a tree was much more cumbersome than it should have been.
Otherwise, the game is fairly simple. The majority of the demo had Capy running around picking up objects in their mouth, and my excitement at seeing that everything I found could be worn on Capy's head like a hat. There is a smell ability that can lead Capy to buried treasures, or sometimes trash, to dig up, and plenty of NPCs looking for some help.
There is no combat in Capy Castaway, focusing solely on exploration, puzzle-solving, and interactions with the NPCs as the story moves along. Developers say that the game is about "finding hope, making friends, and building something new."
Whether it's making a giant pot of soup for monstrously enormous geese or helping pick flowers for a bouquet, this game just gives off a cheerful peace.
Capy Castaway Is Expected Later This Year
The demo for Capy Castaway should be available on Steam during Steam Next Fest, and released for PC and Mac on Steam later this year. Console releases are still listed as "TBD" although the game seems like it would be a wonderful fit for the Nintendo Switch, so hopefully it will be ported to that console at least.
