The facility will be established at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, an institution connected to ETH Zurich, recognized as one of Europe’s premier research universities.

The centerpiece of this installation will be Switzerland’s inaugural IBM Quantum System Two, representing IBM’s newest generation of flagship quantum computers. The system will be powered by the IBM Quantum Nighthawk processor, IBM’s most sophisticated quantum chip currently available.

Complete installation is targeted for completion by the conclusion of 2026. During the interim period, researchers and institutions will maintain access to IBM’s cloud-based quantum computing infrastructure.

Access and Availability

The quantum system will be accessible to Swiss corporations, emerging startups, and research institutions via ETH Zurich. Those participating will also receive entry to the IBM Quantum Network and IBM Quantum Platform.

Educational initiatives will encompass structured courses, professional certifications, specialized workshops, competitive hackathons, and industry conferences.

The research focus is anticipated to span chemistry applications, materials science investigations, optimization problems, and financial services innovations.

The collaboration between IBM and Lockheed Martin originated in 2021, marked by Lockheed’s $1.3 million investment in the Institut Quantique at Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec.

Following that initial commitment, both organizations have pursued joint efforts in quantum computing applications spanning defence operations, national security concerns, and aerospace manufacturing processes.

IBM has pledged over $10 billion toward quantum research initiatives and manufacturing capabilities across the upcoming five-year period.

This Swiss facility builds upon a prior announcement of a decade-long partnership between IBM and ETH Zurich centered on fundamental algorithmic research.

European markets have emerged as strategic locations for U.S.-based quantum technology firms. Substantial government investment and robust academic frameworks have positioned the region as an appealing environment for quantum technology advancement.

Stock prices for both corporations showed minimal movement during Thursday’s premarket trading session. IBM shares declined 0.3%, whereas Lockheed shares increased 0.7%.
