I Was Voted “Best Hair”: Products I Swear by for Shine & Volume

Products I Swear by for Shine & ProtectionE! Illustration/Amazon

I get compliments on my hair almost every time I leave the house, whether I’ve styled it or not. People always ask the same thing: what’s your routine?

While some of it may be genetics, much of it is due to the hair products I use that focus on scalp health, hydration, and heat protection. I'm a fairly low maintenance gal, but I do devote time each week to the care and keeping of my hair because not only does it make my hair look good, my routine helps me feel good too.

I was voted “Best Hair” in school, and years later, people still stop me to ask about my routine, so sharing it feels like a public service at this point. If you're trying to get softer, shinier, longer hair, here’s exactly what works for me.

The best part? So much of my routine is on sale right now.

I have about bra strap-length, naturally wavy, thick, red hair. My texture is actually fairly coarse. If you have fine to thin hair, all of these steps may not be for you.

However, there's one weekly hair ritual I think any hair type can benefit from, and that's oiling your scalp.

A healthy scalp has been shown to be the foundation for growing longer, stronger, hair. I'm a huge fan of inde wild Champi Hair Oil. Once a week, I part my hair in sections and apply the oil down the parts along my scalp.

I then massage it in either with my fingers (if I'm feeling lazy), or with my scalp massager brush. It increases blood flow to my scalp and also helps the hair oil penetrate more deeply. Plus, it feels really relaxing and has become such an integral part of my weekly self-care routine.

I like to rub the extra oil on my hands (or apply a little extra depending on how I've massaged it in) down the length of my hair and put it in a bun on top of my head for about 15 minutes, until it's time to shower.

Sndyi Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush

This scalp scrubber with long silicone bristles can easily penetrate thick hair, distribute shampoo to reach hair roots, and clean the scalp deeply.

This oil can be used as a weekly massage oil, pre-shampoo treatment, or overnight hair treatment for maximum benefits.

Next, I shampoo twice. I'm a beauty editor, so this may come as a shock, but I don't really have a preference when it comes to shampoo. I just want it to smell good and clean any excess oil from my scalp.

If I'm feeling fancy, I'll bring my scalp massager brush into the shower and use it to really help the shampoo work into my strands.

The most important part of my routine is the conditioner. My favorite conditioning product is the COSRX PEPTIDE 132 Hair Bonding Repair Treatment. This conditioner is a must if you have thick to coarse hair. It softens your strands, hydrating them deeply, and even eliminates the look of frizz and flyaways.

This conditioning treatment is designed to strengthen hair bonds, deeply nourish and enhance radiant, glossy shine.

I follow it with the COSRX PEPTIDE 132 Hair Bonding Oil Serum. While it can be used on wet or dry hair, I prefer using it on my hair when it's wet. It helps my hair maintain its wave pattern and adds glossy shine as it dries.

I use about a quarter size amount.

This oil serum repairs damaged hair, strengthens bonds, and leaves hair softer and glossier. Use on wet or dry hair.

I usually heat style my hair for work and events. The fastest way to get glossy, long locks is to protect them from any source of heat, including hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, etc.

I like to use IGK GOOD BEHAVIOR Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray to prevent my hair from getting fried.

This gorgeous smelling smoothing spray is designed to shield hair from heat damage caused by styling tools up to high temperatures.

I was recently introduced to this Mane hot brush and it's changed my life. I am absolutely terrible at blow drying my hair into a style. I was previously waiting for it to air dry and then using my flat iron to create loose curls.

Mane It's Giving Body Large Hot Thermal Round Brush is the fastest and easiest way to create a '90s supermodel blowout in minutes.

As mentioned, I have long hair and I also have a lot of hair. This hot hair tool cut my styling time in half. It takes about 15 minutes to look like I just got a pro blowout! Plus, you don't have to worry about any hot air sucking your hair this way and that. You just hold it like a brush. Amazing!

Instead of using a blow dryer, round brush, and curling iron, this all-in-one hair tool does it all. It creates smooth, frizz-free '90s-inspired blow outs with lasting body and bounce.

If I need a little extra boost of shine on say, day two or three of my style, I like to add IGK Disco Disco Clear Gloss Shine Spray. It smells incredible and it makes your hair shine like glass.

As a naturally wavy girl, I don't brush my hair every day.

I do like to brush my hair when it's wet or if I've styled it and suddenly the ends feel rough. When that happens, I only ever use my Tangle Teezer. It's the most comfortable brush I've ever tried and it never pulls or rips out hair. Plus, you can choose from so many pretty colors.

The long teeth of this vanity-worthy brush gently detangle knots while short teeth smooth the cuticle, helping reduce breakage and split ends on wet or dry hair.
