Hyve Brings a New Kind of Outdoor Locker to Fight Porch Pirates to CES 2025

Annoyed by porch pirates? As our CNET survey discovered, you're far from alone: 1 in 6 US adults experienced package theft in the past year. The Hyve, officially launched at CES 2025, is a smart home delivery pod made to keep your deliveries safe, and it's packed with extra features.

Package delivery boxes are nothing new: In fact, as I've covered recently, they're a centuries-old method of protecting your mail, adopted by modern companies like Keter, Adoorn and Loxx Boxx. But Hyve Security is trying out new features in its product, to try to prevent porch pirate problems. 

I noticed several interesting add-ons to this new locker, including:

1. A carbon fiber tether to keep the box secure. Delivery lockboxes aren't exactly easy to move around, but if you're concerned about thieves snatching up the entire box, then you can use this quarter-inch cable to strap it to a column or railing for safekeeping.
2. An accelerometer to sound a siren if the box is tampered with. The tamper warning will also send you a phone alert so you know when someone unauthorized may have tried to get inside.
3. An app to "disarm" the box for deliveries or send special unlock codes to delivery services, family, friends and others. When a code is used, the owner can get an alert update. The app can also connect to some existing smart home security systems, but details are light on that for now.
4. A small window on the top of the pod so the delivery person can snap a photo to confirm delivery, satisfying both owner and delivery company requirements (this feature is particularly common sense, and I haven't seen another box with it).
5. Compatibility with return package pickup software.

These additions make the Hyve unique among many delivery boxes, but Hyve Security also wants to accomplish something even more ambitious. The pod is made to encourage retailers to spend less money on outer packaging. If everyone had a delivery box, for example, companies could theoretically cut back on package materials designed to protect from the elements or theft, helping the environment and lowering a package's carbon footprint.

That's a lofty goal, but it shows where Hyve Security is coming from. The company was founded by Melissa Kieling (founder of freezable food bag company Packit) and her son to solve this specific home problem. You won't have to wait too long if you want to pick one up: Buyers will be able to purchase the Hyve delivery pod starting in June 2025, at $300.
