Hulu has given a pilot order to Lex, a comedy from Sean Clements (Severance), Paul Simms (What We Do In The Shadows) and 20th Television.
Written by Clements, in Lex, when a disgraced former reality star accidentally films a murder in the background of a $20 Cameo video, he finds himself at the center of a global conspiracy — and on the run from powerful forces who want him dead. Using the skills he acquired navigating reality TV’s toxic social dynamics, Lex must fight to not get killed, to expose the truth, and most importantly… to get back on TV.
Clements and Simms executive produce. 20th Television is the studio.
Lex is the second pilot order announced Wednesday by Hulu. It also picked up drama pilot Durango, from writer Eliza Clark, 20th Television and Media Res. They join the previously announced high-profile Foster Dade drama pilot, from Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran. It’s possible more could be announced, as Hulu has been picking up a few pilots throughout the year rather than sticking to a traditional pilot season.
Clements is a co-executive producer on Season 3 of Apple’s Severance. He penned the screenplay and serves as executive producer on Apple Original Films’ upcoming feature The Dink, produced by Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, directed by Josh Greenbaum, and starring Jake Johnson and Mary Steenburgen. His other credits include executive producing Unstable for Netflix, co-executive producing Kevin Can F**k Himself for AMC, United We Fall for ABC/Sony/ABC, Robbie for Comedy Central and Ghosted and Making History, both for 20th TV/Fox. He also wrote on Workaholics, among others, and is the co-host of the comedy podcast Hollywood Handbook. Clements is repped by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis LLP.
Simms has written for The Larry Sanders Show, Flight of the Conchords, Girls and Newsradio, which he co-created. Simms also served as an executive producer on FX’s What We Do In The Shadows, Atlanta and English Teacher. He received the WGA East’s Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence in 2023. Simms is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham LLP.
