Keep an eye out the next time when, as a gag, you order a cheap Cameo video from a washed-up reality TV star: There might just be a murder accidentally captured in the background. That’s the premise of “Lex,” a comedy pilot ordered Wednesday by Hulu.
From 20th Television, “Lex” comes from writer/executive producer Sean Clements (“Severance”) and exec producer Paul Simms (“Atlanta”). Here’s the logline: “When a disgraced former reality star accidentally films a murder in the background of a $20 Cameo video, he finds himself at the center of a global conspiracy — and on the run from powerful forces who want him dead. Using the skills he acquired navigating reality TV’s toxic social dynamics, Lex must fight to not get killed, to expose the truth, and most importantly… to get back on TV.”
Clements is a co-executive producer on Season 3 of Apple TV’s “Severance,” which shoots this year, and is also the writer behind the upcoming feature “The Dink,” from Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films and starring Jake Johnson and Mary Steenburgen.
Clements also hosts the podcast “Hollywood Handbook” with Hayes Davenport. His additional TV credits include Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” Netflix’s “Unstable,” AMC’s “Kevin Can F**k Himself,” ABC’s “United We Fall,” Comedy Central’s “Robbie,” Hulu’s “Difficult People,” Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” and “Ghosted,” “Making History” and “The Grinder” for Fox.
Simms, who will serve as a non-writing exec producer, has had a run of hits as an executive producer at FX, including “What We Do In the Shadows” and “Atlanta.” His top credits include “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Flight of the Conchords,” “Girls” and “Newsradio.” In recognition of his career, Simms received the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence from the WGA East in 2023.
Clements is repped by UTA and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis LLP, while Simms is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham LLP.
