Hilary Duff Shares Daughter Mae Was in Emergency Room Hours Before MSG Debut
Hilary Duff is making sure people remember.
While performing in Philadelphia on Aug. 9, the Disney Channel alum paid tribute to the late Aaron Carter, whom she dated on and off for three years in the early aughts.
But while much time has passed since she and Carter were an item, Duff proved she still holds the “Aaron’s Party” singer close to her heart—literally. For her show, the Lizzie McGuire star wore a white T-shirt featuring Carter.
The short-sleeved shirt featured a young Carter, early on in his career, standing in jean overalls and a white and red shirt. The background is decorated with blue circles and bears his name.
Though she and Carter had broken up long before his death at age 34 in 2022, Duff—who is mom to daughters Banks, 7, Mae, 5, and Townes, 2, with husband Matthew Koma, as well as son Luca, 14, with ex Mike Comrie—previously detailed her connection to the late child star.
In fact, their bond was so deep that Carter once visited Duff through a psychic.
“I talked to this psychic on the phone, and she doesn’t know who you are when you call,” Hilary explained during her appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast in April. “She’s, like, ‘Well, people are gonna start showing up for you. And there’s someone here. Aaron—two As.’ I was like, ‘Oh my god.’”

The 38-year-old then asked if it was the “Do You Remember” singer, whom Duff met when he made a guest appearance on Lizzie McGuire.
“She was, like, ‘Sure is. What the hell’s he doing here?’” Hilary recalled. “I was like, ‘Well, that’s my childhood boyfriend. And that would make sense to me.’ And she’s like, ‘Are you Hilary Duff?’”
While Duff kept the details of Carter’s visit private, she did affirm that in all, it had been a “really wild experience.”
As for her recent tribute to the “I Want Candy” singer, the Cadet Kelly star has made sure to put her love for her people on display while on tour.

In fact, not only has she verbally shared her love for her and Koma’s kids, but their three daughters even joined their mom onstage during her second performance at Madison Square Garden to partake in the ultimate NYC activity: eating pizza.
After snacking on the New York staple from Joe’s Pizza and chatting with the crowd, Duff told her kids, “I love you guys so much, but if we’re going to get to bed tonight can you guys take this pizza off the stage?”

When asked how important it is for Duff and her partner Matthew Koma to parent 50/50, the singer revealed that it is so not the case that mom and dad's responsibilities are split in half. "I don't believe in that; any mom would know that it's not 50/50. We have a way bigger responsibility always and forever," Duff told Parents.com. "I think it is important that they help in a different way that doesn't always pertain to the baby and the kid. I am a very proactive person and [Matt] is extremely helpful and I know he is going to be a natural but, in the beginning, the mom has most of the responsibility, so they have to pick up the slack in other areas."

"I always feel torn or guilty about something. I'm not working right now, and at first I stressed about that, like, 'Oh, I shouldn't stay still this long.' And that's ridiculous. I have a child; it's totally fine to not be slammed all the time," she told RedBook in 2017. "It feels really good to not be on someone else's schedule — besides Luca's. I'm basically his chauffeur!"

"Some of my friends tell me, 'God, it must be so nice, you get a break from your kid because you share him.' After posting this sweet snap from Disneyland in 2016, Duff took to Instagram to clap back at haters judging her kiss with her son Luca. "For anyone commenting that a kiss on the lips with my four year old is ‘inappropriate' go ahead and click a quick unfollow with your warped minds and judgement," she wrote.
Stop Judging, Please
"Even before you have your baby you can start feeling the judgment. Becoming a mother that whole process is so special and so magical really, but it's also very isolating," Duff told Entertainment Tonight in 2015 about all of the judgement a parent gets from others.
