There has been some renewed love for the Harry Potter franchise in recent months. With the upcoming TV series launching at the end of the year, there's never been a better time for gamers to speculate about what Hogwarts Legacy 2 might look like. Hogwarts Legacy launched back in 2023 to huge success, and we've all been pining for the inevitable sequel ever since.

A theory doing the rounds on Reddit about the setting and timeline for Hogwarts Legacy 2 is gathering some traction among fans. With the release of Hogwarts Legacy 2 possibly lining up with season 2 on the TV series, perhaps the focus of both properties will be on the chamber of secrets. With the TV series retreading Harry's discovery of the chamber, perhaps Hogwarts Legacy 2 will take players back in time to when the chamber of secrets was first discovered.

TerribleChair1803 over on Reddit has a tantalizing theory that sounds like the perfect gaming scenario for fans of the franchise. We've seen glimpses of Harry's parents, Tom Riddle and even a younger Snape in nothing more than flashbacks up until this point. How cool would it be if Hogwarts Legacy 2 was set in the 1940s, and we get to experience the adventures of Tom Riddle before his fondness for snakes takes over. Perhaps even having a younger but no less hairy Hagrid guide us on our adventures as we discover the chamber of secrets for the first time.

Not all fans on Reddit agree, but the theory is a great jumping off point for ideas. One Redditor responded with their own wish for Hogwarts Legacy 2:

"Personally, I'd like a game set around when Dumbledore was a student. Maybe there is a Tri-wizard Tournament featuring the player, Dumbledore, and Grindelwald."

While another Redditor is completely against the idea of using existing characters in the franchise and hopes for something less constrained:

"I think you’re wrong. I think one of the great things about Hogwarts Legacy is the departure from the characters that we know. It feels up the writers, and it frees up the players from having to keep canonical facts straight. I think it works great as a standalone game."

Whichever way the narrative for the sequel goes, it's clear that there's a lot of buzz about Hogwarts Legacy 2. Given everything we know about Hogwarts Legacy 2 so far, the door seems wide open for creativity. Although perhaps a tie-in with the TV series, although timely, wouldn't be the most creative way to push the franchise forward. The first Hogwarts Legacy game excelled as it was able to break away from known characters and build a new story of its own.

Gamers who have yet to experience the magic of Hogwarts Legacy have a last chance to grab the game for free if they hurry. The perfect way to consume your time while we wait to learn more about the map and setting of Hogwarts Legacy 2. Personally, I think the chance to play as Tom Riddle and explore basically Voldemort's origin story is too tempting not to cover in a game. So if Avalanche Studios are reading this...please make it happen.

At the very least, we know that the Hogwarts Legacy franchise is in full flow, and we're expecting the launch of Hogwarts Legacy 2 sometime either late 2027 or 2028. That gives us plenty of time to ponder over possible plot points while we wait to hear something official from those in the know. Who knows... maybe we'll get to play as Winky the drunken elf (look her up). Stranger things have happened.
