Warning: contains spoilers for "Date Night," appearing in Batman/Superman: World's Finest Annual #1!
A historic new member of the Superman Family just made a memorable debut. The Superman Family is large and diverse, consisting not only of the Man of Steel, but also fellow Kryptonians such as Supergirl. The Family is also made up of Superman’s most staunch allies, such as Steel or Superboy. Finally, it also includes the myriad of “super pets” that have appeared over the years.
Krypto first appeared in Adventure Comics #210, and was created by Otto Binder, Curt Swan and Sy Barry.
The Superman Family welcomed the first of many super pets with Krypto the Super Dog’s arrival in 1955. Revealed to be the pet of a baby Kal-El, Krypto was the first test subject for Jor-El’s star drive technology. The super dog drifted through space for years before finally finding Kal-El, now known as Superboy. The two shared many adventures, and Krypto would become a fixture of the Superman Family. While the exact specifics of Krypto’s nature have changed as well, the basic premise remains the same: a dog with Superman’s powers.

Before he was Clark Kent, Superman was born Kal-El on a distant planet doomed to destruction. His parents Jor-El and Lara placed him in a rocket ship as an infant, sending him across the cosmos to Earth. What is the name of Superman’s home planet?
AThanagar BKrypton CApokolips DOa
✓ Correct! Krypton was a scientifically advanced planet that exploded due to its unstable core. Jor-El, Superman’s father, was the only scientist who foresaw the catastrophe and managed to save his son by launching him toward Earth in a small spacecraft.
✗ Not faster than a speeding bullet on that one! The answer is Krypton. Thanagar is Hawkman’s homeworld, Apokolips is Darkseid’s domain, and Oa is the headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps. Krypton’s destruction is the defining event of Superman’s origin story.

ADiana Prince BLana Lang CLois Lane DCat Grant

Despite being nearly invulnerable under Earth’s yellow sun, Superman has one famous weakness — a radioactive mineral from the remnants of his destroyed homeworld. Exposure to it drains his powers and can even kill him. What is this substance called?
AKryptonite BVibranium CNth Metal DRed Sun Ore
✓ Correct! Kryptonite is the irradiated remnants of planet Krypton. Green Kryptonite is the most common and deadly variety, but there are many other types — Red Kryptonite causes unpredictable behavior, Gold Kryptonite can permanently strip his powers, and Blue Kryptonite affects Bizarro.
✗ Not faster than a speeding bullet on that one! The answer is Kryptonite. Vibranium is from Marvel’s Black Panther universe, Nth Metal is tied to Hawkman, and Red Sun Ore isn’t a real DC substance. Kryptonite is the iconic green-glowing mineral that is Superman’s ultimate weakness.

In 1978, a then-unknown actor donned the cape and made the world believe a man could fly. His portrayal of Superman became the gold standard for superhero films and he starred in four Superman movies. Who is this legendary actor?
AHenry Cavill BBrandon Routh CTom Welling DChristopher Reeve
✓ Correct! Christopher Reeve’s portrayal in Superman: The Movie (1978) is widely regarded as the definitive live-action Superman. Superman’s greatest enemy isn’t a superpowered alien — he’s a brilliant, ruthless human billionaire who believes Superman is a threat to humanity’s potential. This bald-headed genius has been Superman’s archenemy for over 80 years. Who is he?
ABrainiac BLex Luthor CDarkseid DDoomsday

After crash-landing on Earth as a baby, Kal-El was found and adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, a kind farming couple. They raised him with strong moral values in a small rural town. Where did Clark Kent grow up?
AGotham City BMetropolis CSmallville, Kansas DCoast City
✓ Correct! Smallville, Kansas is the quintessential American small town where Jonathan and Martha Kent raised Clark with heartland values of honesty, compassion, and humility. It’s the foundation of who Superman is — not the powers from Krypton, but the character instilled by his Kansas parents.

ADaily Planet BDaily Bugle CMetropolis Star DGotham Gazette

This Kryptonian military commander was banished to the Phantom Zone for treason before Krypton’s destruction. He escaped and came to Earth seeking vengeance, famously demanding that others “Kneel before” him. His iconic portrayal by Terence Stamp cemented him in pop culture. Who is this villain?
ABizarro BParasite CMetallo DGeneral Zod
✓ Correct! General Zod is one of Superman’s most terrifying foes because he has all of Superman’s powers but none of his morality. Terence Stamp’s portrayal in Superman II (1980) made “Kneel before Zod” one of the most quoted villain lines in film history. Michael Shannon later reimagined the role in Man of Steel (2013).
✗ Not faster than a speeding bullet on that one! The answer is General Zod. Bizarro is a flawed clone of Superman, Parasite drains powers through touch, and Metallo is a cyborg with a Kryptonite heart. General Zod is the Kryptonian military leader whose cry of “Kneel before Zod!” echoes through decades of Superman stories.

↻ FLY AGAIN
The creative masterminds behind Superman did not stop with Krypto. By the time the Silver Age was in full swing, a veritable zoo had been introduced. Fans would meet Streaky the Super Cat, Comet the Super Horse as well as Beppo the Super Monkey. Some have felt the super pets bog down Superman’s mythology, but in truth they make it more fun. DC understands this, and has introduced a new animal member of the Superman Family.
Behold the Newest Member of the Superman Family: the Super Pig!
The Super Pig makes his debut in the story “Date Night,” written by Mark Waid and Tyrone Finch and drawn by Pat Boutin and appearing in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest Annual #1. Mister Mxyzptlk and Bat Mite decide to create a scenario where Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent both compete for Lois Lane’s attention. The two imps of the Fifth Dimension concoct several hilarious, but good-natured, situations for Bruce, Clark and Lois.
Finally, Bruce and Clark travel to Smallville, which is holding its annual fair. The two heroes partake in fair activities, such as tests of strength. Bruce decides to get into the ring with Super Pig. The Pig and Bruce “fight.” Lois, who is meeting Super Pig for the first time, is surprised at the animal and what it can do. Bruce manages to squeak out a win, and as Mxyzptlk ends the story, the Pig is snuggling up to a triumphant Bruce Wayne.
Super Pig only gets two pages of the story, but manages to make a huge impression on Lois and Bruce. Not much detail is given about Super Pig’s background or origin, but it is clear they have powers of some kind. Furthermore, they were able to hold their own against a world-class fighter like Bruce Wayne, ensuring Super Pig’s first appearance was a grand one. Bruce was a good sport in the fight, helping put Super Pig over even further.
Superman's "Super Pets' Are a Key Part of His Mythology
Krypto and Beppo Balance Out the Darker Side of Superman's Lore

As noted earlier, Super Pets such as Krypto were viewed by some Superman fans as detrimental to the character. They argue that super pets dilute Superman’s unique nature. He is supposed to be the Last Son of Krypton, but it also appears so many others of his kind survived the planet’s destruction. Furthermore, fans argue that a Kryptonian dog resembling one from Earth also stretches credibility. There is validity in these viewpoints, but they also fail to acknowledge that Superman lore has always been “goofy,” and characters like Krypto or Super Pig keep this trend going.
Super pets like Krypto and Super Pig serve a vital role in Superman’s mythology: they provide much-needed balance from the darkness inherent in the concept.
Super pets like Krypto and Super Pig serve a vital role in Superman’s mythology: they provide much-needed balance from the darkness inherent in the concept. Superman lost everything as a child, including his family and home world. Superman fights a lonely battle, continually carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Krypto, Beppo and Super Pig serve as reminders to Superman, to always remember where he came from, and what he is fighting for.
Super Pig Needs to Join Official DC Canon
And judging from his debut, Super Pig will take his place next to Krypto and Streaky in the hearts and minds of Superman fans. Waid, Finch and Boutin give fans just enough of a glimpse at the Super Pig, leaving them wanting more. The Pig’s origins are not revealed, feeding speculation on how he came to be. Was he a Kryptonian castoff like Krypto? Or was he just a normal animal who gained powers, such as Streaky? Superman fans want to know.
It is important to note that “Date Night” is a creation of Bat Mite and Mister Mxyzptlk, meaning Super Pig’s standing in official DC canon is unclear. If Super Pig is not in regular continuity, then DC needs to make him official as soon as possible. It is not everyday a new member of Superman’s Family debuts, making Super Pig’s initial appearance a historic occasion, one the publisher should seize on immediately.
