Made in partnership with Jordan Peele and Xbox, the upcoming release of OD: A Hideo Kojima Game has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced, with the only thing we really know for sure being the confirmed members of its cast. While we've seen a few recent teases that are hyping up OD to be a terrifying experience, we have never seen the likes of it before, the scariest thing recently has been its chances of release.
While it hasn't been officially declared by just yet, several insiders have claimed that the company will be launching a massive wave of layoffs in the coming weeks, which is reportedly seeing the tragic closing of several major studios filled with talented developers.
While there were worries that Kojima's upcoming OD would be a part of the recent financial reorganization, the same insiders have claimed that the project is safe from the upcoming cuts and will still be developed as planned in close partnership with Xbox publishing, as noted by Aocc4 on Reddit.
With Xbox having stated that they're "not reducing our overall investment in games," but rather the "kinds of projects we're backing", it's not too surprising that Kojima's legacy has helped him survive the recent cuts, but fans have been more than elated at the bittersweet news.
Given that Xbox is already coming under heavy fire for continuing the trend of putting developers out of a job in what's being described as one of the 'biggest layoffs in gaming history', fans were quick to note that Kojima's name is so strong that cancelling his game would give immense negative press," especially after the previous incidents that tainted Konami's name for years.
Some fans also pointed out that Xbox should already face negative press "regardless of the name of the closed studios and canceled games" for contributing to the industry-wide layoff problem.
Other players have been trying to think on the brighter side of things, however, taking the leak as a sign that the exception of OD "probably means the game is pretty far along" in its development cycle, as during previous incidents, the biggest factor for "who got cut and who didn't was how far along their projects were."
While it's always a tragedy whenever layoffs like these occur, regardless of the industry, Silent Hill and Kojima fans can at least rest a little easier knowing that OD isn't following the same trend as the previously canceled P.T. game, and considering the similarities between OD and P.T., there were more than a few concerns that it would be "another Silent Hills situation" all over again.
