HiddenLight has partnered with Universal Pictures Content Group to co-produce Sam Pollard’s feature-length documentary “Tutu,” which makes its world premiere in the Berlin International Film Festival.
Pollard (Oscar nominee for “Four Little Girls”; “MLK/FBI,” “Citizen Ashe”) directs the intimate portrait of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the rebel cleric whose moral leadership helped bring about the end of apartheid in South Africa, transforming the soul of a nation and inspiring generations around the world. The film screens in the Special Presentation section of the festival.
The film uses first-hand testimony and newly discovered archival footage from journalist Roger Friedman, and activist and photographer Benny Gool to tell the heroic and powerful story of Tutu, the fearlessly Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1984) who played a pivotal in ending apartheid in South Africa. He later chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate apartheid-era abuse.
“Tutu” is produced by Johnny Webb for HiddenLight; Ellie Phillips also produces, with Paul Trewartha acting as story producer and editor.
Executive producers include Pollard, Ricardo Pollack, Niclas Kjellström Matseke (chairman of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation), Richard Branson, Sam Branson, Cristina Ljungberg, Dr. Kop Matseke, Dr. Ayanda Ntsaluba, Jens von Bahr, Shannon Sedgwick Davis and Helen Parker for Universal Pictures Content Group, and South African comedian, writer and producer Trevor Noah and Sanaz Yamin for Day Zero Prods.
