2027's upcoming Helldivers movie is already teed up to have a perfect story given the source material the film is set to draw from. Many of the biggest and most praised sci-fi movies of all time tend to draw from some other sources, be that book adaptations like the Dune series, or films simply taking clear inspiration from sci-fi predecessors of all kinds, be that books, shows or other movies themselves.
As such, the news that Helldivers is set to get a movie adaptation is one that certainly has promise, given the history of the sci-fi genre on-screen, and the series' capacity to provide high-octane action while also having far more than just that to it story-wise. Indeed, the way the Helldivers games have fleshed out this universe suggests the movies already have the perfect material to work with.
2027's Helldivers Movie Has A Perfect Pre-Built In Story To Adapt Given The Narrative Of The Games
While some video games are harder to adapt than others, the recently announced Helldivers movie adaptation finds itself on some solid ground when it comes to making a compelling and engaging story.
The narrative of the Helldivers games are inherently fascinating, in that they place the player in the role of acting as a futuristic solider in a totalitarian dystopia, wherein humanity has grown more advanced than ever technologically, but also descended into a society wherein "Super Earth" has completely blinded most of its population with propaganda.
As such, the society of Super Earth is obsessed with its military, and the wars carried out on several other, generally alien factions - which are lauded as righteous and go unquestioned, even though they tend to be for far more cynical purposes. As such, Helldivers and Helldivers 2 are able to parody many conventional sci-fi tropes, while providing stories wherein players have to unpack the reality of the situations they find themselves in based on the half-truths they're fed about them.
This core concept is one that should translate flawlessly into film format, given it's an inherently fascinating one, and given similar releases like Starship Troopers have enjoyed success thanks to the innovative ways they explore the sci-fi genre. This core concept also allows the Helldivers movie to either follow it while building its own narrative path, or to more directly adapt specific events like the First Galactic War.
The Helldivers 2 Game Already Primes The 2027 Helldivers For A Sequel
Promisingly, the overarching story of the Helldivers games is still expanding, as Helldivers 2 is still actively releasing, and adding new chapters to the franchise and its lore.
This makes the Helldivers movie adaptation an even more exciting prospect, since it could easily be followed up on for a sequel film should the first installment prove to be a sufficient hit - as there's a true wealth of history for films to draw from, and a lot left open to interpretation that a movie adaptation could well and truly make its own.
Though the amount of story and choice that the Helldivers movie has open to it may paradoxically make setting up its story harder in terms of knowing where to start, the backdrop the film has built for it already certainly suggests hugely promising things for what's to come with the movie's eventual release.
