HBO’s first Harry Potter release reveals why the beloved franchise is being rebooted as a TV series. Many commentators and fans have understandably taken a cynical view of the series, given the widespread proliferation of money-spinning screen franchise reboots in recent years, but the short documentary Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic is the perfect way to answer them.
The motivation underpinning the new HBO TV show isn’t the box-office profits of the Harry Potter movies. It’s the genuine love for the franchise bringing together countless cast and crew members from around the world.
The beauty of the documentary released on April 5 is that it allows so many of those involved in the project at every level to speak for themselves. Perhaps production designer Mara LePere-Schloop says it best, when she details her work on various sets for the TV show, from Diagon Alley to Privet Drive.
For LePere-Schloop, there’s a clear reason for HBO’s Harry Potter to exist, which distinguishes it from the previous movie series. "There's really a ton of thought that's going into this,” she explains, “so that for the diehard fans we're trying to land it."
It isn’t enough for this iteration of the franchise to be a fresh screen approximation of Harry’s world. The team behind the show is working to bring every element of the wizarding world to life, from scenes not in the movies, to the most peripheral of magical phenomena.
HBO's Behind-The-Scenes Harry Potter Documentary Is A Love Letter To The Franchise
HBO’s Harry Potter documentary special is a must watch for even the most casual Potterhead, given the level of affection everyone in it has for the franchise. There are real-life stories of magical discovery even more moving and profound than what we expect to watch in the TV series itself, once it debuts on December 25, 2026.
Almost everyone who’s interviewed, from actors to construction managers, has a tale to tell about their special connection to the Harry Potter books and movies. One crew member met his wife on the set of the third film, while multiple others mention that they’re the second generation of their family to have worked on the franchise.
One costume designer remembers the Hogwarts robes she shared with friends as a schoolgirl, and another describes realizing her dream of bringing the magical school to life for the son she first read the books with. Overall, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic does a great job convincing us that the new HBO show is a fan-made production.
Finding Harry: The Craft Behind The Magic Proves The New Series Is "For The Fans"
Yet, the series isn’t just made by fans. It’s also made for the fans – and the diehard Potterheads, in particular. As production designer Mara LePere-Schloop says, “We are adding a level of world-building that is even beyond what the audience is familiar with.” This TV show is going to be the most complete picture of Harry Potter we’ve ever seen.
While there will always be naysayers who believe the franchise has already been done to death, there are generations of fans who don’t think the movies quite did it justice. The accurate rendering onscreen of J. K. Rowling’s literary world, down to the finest details, is something a hardcore contingent of Potterheads has been wanting for decades.
Based on the evidence in HBO’s behind-the-scenes documentary, the potential cons of rebooting Harry Potter appear to be outweighed by the pros in this particular production. Maybe there wasn’t a fundamental need to remake the movies as a TV show, but a lot of good seems to be coming out of it.
The series is scratching an itch that’s preoccupied so many of us at home – and, apparently, many of those behind the camera, too – for the past 15 years. For better or for worse, Harry Potter is coming back. Either way, it’s returning for the right reasons, and in the right hands.
