HBO is famous for releasing some of the best TV shows of all time. Whether it’s classic crime thrillers like The Sopranos andThe Wire, or fantasy epics like Game of Thrones, the studio has proved time and time again to be the premier home for prestige television. HBO has also recently dipped into the medical drama genre with the release of The Pitt, the Emmy-winning series starring Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa. HBO also has other famous, prestigious dramas like Succession, and newer shows like Industry have come in to fill the gap left behind by shows like Succession. HBO spent years searching for a proper successor to Game of Thrones, but what many fans wouldn’t expect is that it would find its champion in the sci-fi genre.
In 2016, when HBO was nearing the end of its time investing money into Game of Thrones, the production company launched the first season of Westworld. The hit sci-fi series features big names like Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, and even Tessa Thompson, and it’s set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past. It’s set in a world where every human appetite can be indulged without consequences. HBO released four seasons of Westworld between 2016 and 2022 before abruptly canceling the show despite concrete plans for a fifth season. Now, four years after going off the air, Westworld is proving to be the perfect weekend binge as it surges back into global streaming charts. The sci-fi show earned scores of 80% from critics and 75% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
What Is Streaming on HBO Max Right Now?
The flagship Game of Thrones series may have ended over five years ago, but HBO is still investing in offshoots like House of the Dragon. The second official Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to wrap up this weekend, and the show has yet to be dethroned at the top of streaming charts. Its closest competitor has been The Pitt, the aforementioned medical drama that is still early into a 15-episode season. Heated Rivalry, the steamy hockey drama that took over the zeitgeist late in 2025, has also surged into the HBO Max top three. Another medical drama, Doc, is #10 on HBO Max global charts right now.
Check out all four seasons of Westworld on HBO Max and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
